This is where I’m at too. I could care less if we’re at least playing interesting hockey. As @BlindWillyMcHurt said, gimme the 5-6 firewagon loss over a boring 0-1 slopfest.

Anyone remember fun?

I mean for heaven sake forget about Cups for a second. Sure that would be incredible and a truly ridiculous cherry on top of an already-outrageous run with this group. But man it's not like we haven't already wrung an absurd amount of success out of the core. It's alright to root for some entertainment before we send these guys along to the Hall.

And hey they make the dance and who knows.

He will either play with Graves or Petts, both are very good at handling tough QoC and heavy minutes. Also, he is going to get sheltered, so he will be starting behind Geno a ton. Letang will still handle the heavy defensive assignments.
Our 2nd pairing got very similar usage to our 1st last year, in minutes and matchups. You could argue Petry had tougher 5v5 minutes than Letang, with higher D-zone starts.
So yeah, you can offer sheltered usage to EK, but then Letang's defensive responsibilities go up and he'll produce less offense too.
There's always a trade-off.
There is no reason for anyone to be upset about this deal, it's amazing for us, and just what Sid and Geno need at this stage of their careers.
I am as happy about this deal as everyone else. I am merely trying to project what will actually happen.
I think it's difficult for EK to compensate for everything we lost in this trade, especially when he's already eating 10 mil and blocking other potential acquisitions. It's a big ask for him to live up to 10 mil alone, when he's horrible at defending.

Even if we get the bad version of Karlsson, we traded Granlund and Petry for him. He is still offers 10x more value than those two regardless.

Yes, but the best defense is a good offense. We're doing the sport cliches today. Already got the "trade all of our bad players for all of their good players" one in.

Pens need a little cap space since Guentzel won't be out that long. Minnesota also needs cap space, how about 2 trades...
Joseph to MIN for Middleton, gives MIN needed cap space to get to a 23 roster. Second trade, Pettersson to ANA for Hagg, Carrick and their own 3rd rounder back.
Would give the Pens approx. $700k in cap space with a 22 man roster and some added beef...

Guentzel Crosby Rakell
Smith Malkin Rust
O'Connor Eller Acciari
Nieto Carrick Pitlick
Carter

Graves Letang
Middleton Karlsson
Hagg Smith
Ruhwedel

Jarry
Nedeljkovic

Petry is not a bad player. You could probably get 45-50 points out of him if used on PP1 all year, while getting significantly better defense than Karlsson.
Rutta is much better than Ruhwedel, who will likely be playing now.
DeSmith has been much better than Nedeljkovic the last 2 years.
Even Granlund could have been a little better than another depth guy we're about to use, but that's borderline. Who knows.

We didn't get EK for free though. Have no illusions about that.

They're 79K over with Guentzel activated. They can get compliant by sending Pitlick down and calling up a 775K Forward, like Zohorna.

Robert Hagg is an ass pile.

I was not trolling when I said last year I watched the first period and then checked the score in the morning basically every game.

They were f***ing boring and just not worth 2-3 hours of my time

I'm not going to lie man... it was a chore a lot of nights. When you can literally see the third period collapse coming from ten miles off and every goal they scored felt like a herculean effort all while two old men were carrying the whole-ass team... it didn't give much reason to not just check box scores.

Anything to inject some life into this team is a very good thing. I don't think anyone is really saying that this vaults them back into contention but it sure gives people a reason to turn it on, again.

Alright for real, now... celebratory beers.

Pens are less than $80k over the cap.

Guentzel will be out long enough for that to no longer be an issue. If it is, they can send Nylander or someone down for two weeks after Guentzel returns and they'll be back under the cap.

Yeah good point, the salary cap is a cumulative sum not just a daily function. They can run with a 21 man roster for their off-days and be able to accrue enough cap space to be compliant with a 22 man roster pretty quickly. I imagine they could get that $80k on the cap within a week or two.

Knowing the Pens, someone is always injured, too. Hextall seemed bizarrely reluctant to put anyone on LTIR. Dubas isn't.
