TechPowerUp's review has 4K tests at the highest settings with a 4090 and the improvement is very small over the 7800X3D and even your 5900X, likely because the scenarios are now GPU limited.

It seems like it's not worth upgrading to right now if you play at the highest settings for the best visual quality, but may be worth it if you play at more modest settings (High, DLSS, RT off, etc.) for higher framerates.

The 9800X3D is selling out while the rest of the generation is gathering dust on shelves.

It'll probably be in and out of stock for the next month or two. Good for me, as I'm getting parts late Jan/early Feb.
I read that the 7800X3D went out of stock quickly when it was released, too, and took a few weeks to become available again, but then stayed in stock. Maybe it'll be the same with the 9800X3D. Like SolidSnakeUS, I don't mind as long as it's in stock in late Jan/early Feb. Of course, there are probably lots of other people waiting until then to upgrade, so maybe it'll actually be hard to get then, too. I hope not.

Thanks for that, I'll do more research but doesn't seem like it's worth buying a new CPU, motherboard, and RAM, at least for gaming.

The performance uplift in CPU limited games is pretty impressive. When running Starfield at ultra settings, 4k DLSS performance, the 9800X3D has 1% lows equal to the average frame rate of the 5900X lol.
I'm not in a rush to upgrade so I'll probably wait until the 9900X3D and 5000 series GPUs are announced before I decide

Plot twist : i have a 4090 and just realized I’ve had my monitors plugged into the mother board instead of the graphics card for well over a year

Went to purchase a SSD to put games on because the loading time is super fast. Ended up buying a SATA drive, but due to case issues and improper cable plugin I figured I would just let someone else do it.
Find out about M.2 drives which are pretty interesting and run faster. Might look into that for my next SSD drive (I could return the one I purchased saturday and get M.2 instead but I don't feel like it and the dang things are only 50 dollars)

NVMe/m.2 drives are nice for space and cable management and much faster for reading and writing files, but don't make much difference to game loading times. You might save one second, but that's about it. Eventually, games might take advantage of technology like DirectStorage and perform better on such drives, but we're still waiting on that. For now, SATA drives are good enough for games. That's why even recommended ultra specs for games simply list "SSD" for storage and don't specify the type (SATA or NVMe).

It's nice to see Intel be competitive. I'm not sure that it'll still be the best value GPU a month from now, though, as I expect the RX 8600 to be at least a little bit better, especially in ray tracing, although it could be $50 more expensive, too.

We have just over 2 weeks until Nvidia announces the 5000 series at CES and im pretty excited for it. If the 5090 comes anywhere close to the leaked specs it should be a mind blowing piece of hardware.
