Seems fairly accurate. There were players here during Maurice’s reign whose roles and ice time were firmly entrenched.

Yeah, a common complaint going back to probably even 2016 was that he had a lineup default stuck in his head. He'd break it up and then they'd snap back together like a rubber band. And it wasn't just the depth chart on paper either, it's like players were going to get roughly their set allotment of shifts each game. Using Ehlers as an example it just never felt like Maurice was willing to trust him to play a larger role.

I would imagine with Dave being a consummate professional he stayed in his lane and let the hc drive the team.

I always subscribe to the thought that when you put someone in charge you let them do it their way and succeed or fail honestly. You don't interfere because then you haven't given them a chance.

I'm willing to bet we will see some differences in player utilization and systems, namely the hybrid d zone setup that hasn't worked well at all.

I agree. Knowing the type of player Dave Lowry was I think he will demand accountability by the players. All the players. Xmas came early for guys like Ehlers and PLD. It was never my impression that our D-zone coverage was designed by Charlie Huddy. He just carried it out the way Maurice wanted it. We should know shortly.

Really surprised by this. Just further cements my respect for Maurice the man. Didn't wait to be fired. Took the hit to his bank account like a man.

He recognized exactly what many of us here have been saying. He can't get this team to the next level. Let someone else try.

I wouldn't mind at all if he could find a role in Wpg somewhere. He would be a good replacement for Sawyer.

This was a change that needed to be made, but I do not take any joy or delight in it. Sometimes, we forget that these are people, and not just characters in a video game there for the sole purpose of our amusement. It's a sad day. Paul Maurice seems like a very classy human being and today I feel bad for him. But, he only has himself to blame for what has happened. With Wheeler and Scheifele out, this team was doing well. When they came back, he put Wheeler and Scheifele's success ahead of the team's success, and that is why we are where we are today. I wish Paul Maurice all the best, and I only hope today's decision will help the Jets improve and get to where they need to be. Go Jets Go!

So do people think the bag skate was it? Sounds like Paul has great respect for his players, yet he gives them a bag skate... was that it for Paul? Thinking what am I'm doing? I have nothing left to offer and I'm out of ideas?

Or did Chevy watch the bag skate and think to himself... here is a coach who's out of ideas?

I am tempted to think Chevy witnessed the bag skate yesterday and perhaps thought, we've reached the end here. Pure speculation, of course, and likely even pointless for me to try and piece together obviously. But at no point today did Chevy go to bat for Maurice in any way. Not one comment from Chevy (unless I missed it?) saying anything such as "Paul could have stayed on and continued to push this team and seen this through if he so chose". Chevy more so than less sounded like a GM who knew we were at the end of the road with our head coach.

Also, this could have been (perhaps ideally?) done yesterday on an off-day, rather than a game day. TNSE strikes me as an org. who would take care of this on an off day. So I do think things may have unfolded late yesterday afternoon after the bag skate practice/Paul's media availability which was nearing 2 or 3pm I believe. Both sides likely had a lengthy and honest conversation on where things were at and headed and I think they let Paul handle this this morning "on his own terms" as if it were on his own doing. It has been discussed here plenty about the love and respect Chipman and co. seem to have for Maurice. But, with that being said, both sides were likely in a mutual agreement that this was best. Paul seemed pretty darn honest today, I don't doubt that for a second even if he is a talker. He was sincere and I think he was in agreement

But this is all pure speculation, and maybe even silly for me to try and piece together, I suppose. I just think based on Chevy's comments that he seemed like a GM who knew and was ready for this coach to be finished with this team. Chevy just didn't seem to offer much support to Maurice today in terms of "it was his job and he was on contract" sort of thing. That's just the vibe I got.

He was probably given the option to resign or be let go.

TNSE letting him feel it was his decision.

If he is fired, he gets paid to the end of his contract. He resigned, so I assume that means no pay.

Maurice and Chevy have been together here for a number of years. Clearly, there was plenty of mutual respect and I think both parties simply agreed that it would be best for the team for Paul to resign.

To finish the sentence:

...because Paul was not getting much out of the talent that is on this team.

Just like most have been saying here this year. And many have been saying since 18'-'19. And quite a few have been saying after we got clocked by Vegas in the WCF. Better late than never I guess.

Throwing away the '18-'19 season on Maurice really hurt me the most. That was a team that again had the horses to go all the way. You don't get many chances like that. Glad that Chevy finally came to his senses and decided that Maurice needed to decide to retire. Too much talent on this roster to throw away another year on Paul.

But Paul by all accounts is a great person. I wish nothing but the best for him and his family. I hope to see him back in hockey. Maybe in broadcasting, or it would be great if he became a coach of one of our divisional opponents.

No… Wheeler needs to go… this offseason. That will put Mark in his proper place and help the team in cap at the same time.
If I’m Chevy, I’m already looking at possible trade options for Wheeler.

He'd be a hot ticket item with his 9 mil salary and performance to match. Chevy would be drowned in offers :D

Yeah, I phrased that wrong. What I meant is, I don’t think he came to this conclusion himself. I think he had a talk with the organization and they were candid with him — and presented him with an opportunity to go out on his own terms.

It could even have been worded to put the last decision on him.. "if we don't see a change in results, we're not renewing your contract".. Paul realizes he's lost the room, sees the writing on the wall, and wants to go out on his terms.

Gotta love everyone getting offended by posters being honest and not kissing PoMos ass as he leaves.
For the record…
I have zero respect for Maurice. I don’t know him personally, have never met him, and no nothing about him outside the game. I hold zero loyalty to him. As far as I am concerned, his mediocrity, inability to adapt, and willingness to bow to Wheelers wishes make him a lousy head coach. He is what stood in the way of my team winning a cup and me celebrating it by rubbing it in my Habs fan sons face.
Do I wish Paul Maurice harm, no, but neither do I care if he ever coaches again or not. I’m a Winnipeg Jets fan, and that’s not the head coach, GM, ownership, or players… it’s the organization as a whole and the product on the ice.
This move by the Jets is a perfect example of addition by subtraction.
Good bye PoMo… this fan won’t miss you one second.
Go Jets Go

Maybe I'm out to lunch but I was a bit underwhelmed on how the players reacted to the media. Not much emotion. I wonder if they feel Maurice "quit on them"

I'm guessing this was mutually agreed to and not fully his decision.

Could be. But speculation.

They could have agreed to buy him out too, but also speculation.

All we know is that he resigned rather than he was fired. I'm happier crediting Maurice with the character to fall on his sword. He has always been an upright guy.

If there was no mutual agreement about pay he is giving up more than half a season's salary.

I’ll always remember the 9-8 Philly game when he said to the media after “I thought to myself, self — you’re a crazy man trying to make sense of that.”

You're very close, and I correct not to upbraid, but because it's even better than you remembered it :D

"Self, you're a sick man for trying to make logic of this".

(A statement I've told my own self many a time at the poker table since :P)

Starts at 2:25. Or heck, just play the whole thing, it's awesome :)

Chevy did say that Paul was being taken care of. I'm assuming that means they will pay him to the end of the year and maybe even a bonus and not "take care of him" in the mob sense.

OK, so a severance package of some kind. Good.
