portzline casually mentioned in his sunday gathering piece that laine actually tore his triceps (it was only reported as a strain before so he might be wrong) which wouldn't bode well for him playing at WCs but you never know

If this is true and it's on his right hand, he's not shooting any pucks for the next 4 to 6 months...

Even with the original estimated timeline he was almost guaranteed to miss the rest of the season, especially since his interview from late March made it seem like he felt like he's likely to miss more time, not less... he even seemed a bit doubtful about the WHC :| But I really hope it's just a bad strain, and not that it's actually something worse than diagnosed at the time.

Few physical therapy sessions with Dr. Barkov and he should be good to go for the World Championships

The fact he hasnt had surgery yet likely means a partial tear and that would be weeks not months. Could also just be poor wording by Portzline too
I think you can be right. He hasn't played enough long. If problems are really serious, the team doctors would diagnose it.

When Patrik first joined the team and after I got a chance to observe his game in more detail and after I got to him know as a person (as much as I can as a fan) I was pretty critical of him. I got a fair amount of pushback at that time. My mind hasn't changed much over time on him as a player although as a person I like him more.

He has all of the tools that a team needs when it comes to goal scoring. He has that big shot that every PP coach wants to be successful and he is elite in that role. He seems to care even if he looks frustrated at times. He wants to be the best he can be and he will try to do things he thinks will help the team win games even if it wasn't the greatest idea at the time. In the two full seasons that he has been with the team he is close to a PPG player. He's a good player. Few posters on this board will say he is not a good player.

But I still get the feeling that in most of the games that I've seen him play (every CBJ game that he has ever played in) is that he has so much more to give and that I will either never see him deliver it or it just isn't there to deliver. Combine this with his injury history and knowing that even though he has improved his overall game since he arrived it is still below the standard needed to justify his cap hit.

I haven't given up on Patrik. I have always said that he isn't someone to build a team around. But he isn't some no talent useless plug either. The coaching change may be the best timing to finally see what they have in Patrik and to determine if he will be part of the solution moving forward. Can the new coach get Patrik to another level or is this all that we will ever get from him. I'm excited to see what a new coach can do with him.

I think many can relate to most of your points.

Sense I'll probably become more active here I might as well come out as another Finnish Laine fanboy. Hopefully I'll be a Blue Jackets fan also for a long time, team looks promising and you guys also aren't that bad. I follow some other teams also and man there are some nasty people in the internet.

I might not be the most the typical Laine fanboy since I don't think he is the perfect best player out there and I see a lot of fault in his game, but to me he just is the most interesting (finnish) player in the NHL. A lot of that has to do with above mentioned notion that you get the feeling there is something more, he has another gear, he could become something very special. I have no idea whether he will become something otherworldly, but that something is the thing that hooks you, like a cliffhanger at the end of an episode. I came to these boards when I was a huge Ville Leino fan, mostly for the same reasons, hopefully Laine has a better ending to his story.

What I think most important when evaluating Laine as a player is that he is getting better. If you compare his game to one/two years ago, it's gotten way better, and it's noticeable. I think a lot has got to do with the fact that he is trying out stuff and he is given some freedom for that. He makes a lot of mistakes but he is learning from them, maybe slowly sometimes. He wasn't a ready player when he came to NA and I think he still is finding his game. It's ok to be a slow learner.

As a person I love Laine. No bullshit. Have fun. I have no idea how someone can hate him.

Most people skate better if they move their legs.
Well, that was his problem. Unless, of course, you count some period after the injury. I hope he finally starts thinking about it, so many are already talking about it...

What's interesting to follow here is his offseason training and how he comes into the preseason and early season.

I think we mostly agreed that he looked pretty good in preseason this year and looked good in the first game until he got injured. He was playing with that "passion" I'd say. The rest of the season wasn't bad either in my opinion but maybe he lost a step that he could gain back when it's meaningful again.

If he now is excited about the center experiment and it pushes him to train harder (and I assume a lot of the physical training would be the same regardless of the position), it'll be interesting and even exciting to see how he looks when preseason rolls around. And that's regardless of the position he'll play, if he has a good and motivated offseason I'm sure it'll help on the wing too, and maybe he can learn some other nuances from learning the center position more.

saw this in the offseason thread but think that my related rant would make more sense here:

Try to guess who Porty is going to trade? :sarcasm:

i think the odds of a laine trade are probably higher than this board assumes they are, but portzline's gone out of his way to dump all over laine recently.

first, in last week's sunday gathering:
“In some cases with these injuries, guys have to take a long look in the mirror,” Kekalainen said.

Two players the Blue Jackets were counting on heavily this season would seem to match Kekalainen’s description:

  • Goaltender Elvis Merzlikins has been out of the lineup three times with back and lower-body injuries. He suffered a lower-body injury and left a game on March 24 in Montreal. He’s missed seven games since then and is questionable to play again this season. He’s started only 27 games this season.
  • Forward Patrik Laine has missed the last nine games with a torn triceps, the fourth time this season he’s been out of the lineup. Laine has missed 55 games of a possible 211 games (26 percent) since he was traded to Columbus on Jan. 23, 2021.
portzline paints laine's four injuries this year as somehow being his own fault, when those injuries were:
1. hyperextended elbow (on this hard hit)
2. sprained ankle (skates tied up on this play)
3. covid (missed two games)
4. triceps (reported as sprain, portzline mentioned it was torn?)

the first two of those are awkward impact injuries – unlucky, unavoidable. he came back earlier than expected from both. the third is COVID. not sure what portzline is trying to say there.

the fourth led to him getting shut down while the team was shutting down all of its injured players. it's absurd to paint that as somehow being unique to laine, or problematic, or being his own fault.

then, in the article about larsen getting fired:
The Blue Jackets expect to make significant changes to their lineup, but there are two star players whose careers need to be put back on the rails: left winger Patrik Laine and goaltender Elvis Merzlikins.
portzline saying that laine's career has gone 'off the rails' makes no sense given that he just:
1. led the team in points/game
2. was their best player in a lot of advanced stats (only positive GF% on the team, best CF%)
3. got better as the season went on (13-23–36 in his last 31 games; 95 point pace)
4. had four assists in two games AT CENTER after never playing there

the way that portzline has written about laine ever since his arrival has seemed odd but this is taking it to a whole different level – just completely disregarding facts to take swipes at laine in articles that have nothing to do with him.

I'm not saying he won't be traded, although that would be foolish. We're not going to get a TOP center for a winger unless he is called Ovechkin/Kucherov, which it was 10 years ago. Even if we add the first round. But Porty is Porty.

Career gone off the rails? Whatttt. Why does no one around him question these takes? Last season I thought his opinions were heavily influenced by Dom since they probably do some work together, but this season even Dom's charts have taken a huge positive turn for Laine. Still it seems Porty just keeps diving deeper in there.

Is this just somehow personal since with Laine's arrival came so many other changes inside the org? Great buddies with Atkinson, Torts etc. who were casualties of the changes? At this point it feels like any statistical indicators are completely missing from Porty's takes

That off the rails is a bit... off. :D Even bus wouldn't say "off the rails" because he never thought highly of Laine to begin with.

I think Laine has trade value at least with some teams and maybe we could get something nice back, but it would be a bit strange when he's been getting better in his career here and seemingly likes the city and the team. It's sometimes hard to read his thoughts even as a fellow Finn but I think he genuinely A) likes the city, B) the team, C) is trying to get better. That's a good starting point.

If he would end up traded then it would rid us of this constant speculation and bickering though, so there's that. :sarcasm:

Forgot about this. This play is all I or anybody should need.

There’s so much more here than just “cherry picking” a negative highlight to make somebody look bad. Symbolic of what Laine is as a player.

Need more Zach Parise’s and less Patrik Laine’s. And no, I’m not talking 38 year old/40 point Parise’s, although as shown above, we’d literally win more games.

the absolute kindest interpretation i can think his own player evaluation is deeply flawed and he's projecting it onto his writing.

more specifically, portzline is a huge fan of guys with size/grit. he couldn't stop himself from writing about how much he loved josh anderson a few years ago, and also repeatedly said that josh dunne was going to be an NHL mainstay after the jackets signed him.

dunne has played eight games in the last two years – all as an injury call-up – with zero points. anderson is fast and big but has third line production.

portzline also wrote recently that marchenko 'supplanted' laine, despite laine being far more productive (0.95 ppg vs 0.42 ppg) and well-rounded (better playmaking/on-ice impacts). but marchy gets goals from in close and is a new face.

again, this is the kindest interpretation to portzline, where it's not personal and is just him having bad opinions that he can't stop from sharing. but i'm not convinced that it isn't personal.

this is impressively low-effort trolling. definitely not cherry picking to point to a bad 3v3 sequence where the jackets literally don't have a defenseman on the ice! nope, not at all!

I don't understand what "supplanted" s going on? Marchenko, thanks to his style, has better chemistry with Gaudreau. Laine has changed his style, he's trying to hold the puck, trying to pass more. When he was playing with Nyquist and Jenner he was using it well but also he must shot moore. Similarly on the line with Chinakhov/Johnson on the wing and Roslovic at center. That's why I prefer a line of Chinakhov -- Laine -- Voronkov, read similar players on the wings, as I doubt both could play. Nyquist would be ideal, but I doubt he'll be back.

That's precisely why it isn't interesting for me to follow. Laine could show up in great shape again and it would be hard to get excited about it. He was injured in the first game in two of the last three years.
