The risk is minimal. The chance for Harris to be better than 3 of Guhle, Hutson, Xhekaj, Struble, Engtrom is almost 0 and we were not going to ice him enough for him to get more value he was always going to be a guy who would develop elsewhere. The trade is basically we trade Harris for a 2nd round pick to ice 3 of Guhle, Xhekaj, Hutson, Engstrom and Struble which is totally fair and we gamble on Laine for nothig.
Not only that, but of all those players, Harris was the only one who had to be put on waivers if sent back in the AHL.

So he was stuck in an awkward situation... getting a 2nd round pick is already a steal!

He has yet to demonstrate that he can be a regular NHL player. There was a real chance to loose him for nothing if some of the other D prospects are showing NHL readiness.

Harris was the odd man out any way you look at it. I'm not worried he suddenly becomes a top pairing D, if he does then good for him but it's very unlikely. At this point in time trading him for a 2nd is a good move, it's more than he's worth.

I didn't want Laine but Hughes has been money and I'll trust his judgment.
It does have the potential to be a major steal.
Habs could be making noise this season.

Love this, cap space won't be a problem and only 2 years left on his deal. If things don't work out no biggie, if he bounces back this could be the steal of the decade. Definition of low-risk/high-reward.

Kudos Kent, we just added an elite talent and arguably the best shot in the league for basically nothing.
