How many reigning major trophy winners decide to retire? This feels kinda unprecedented for a winner of one of the following to just retire:

Hart
Art Ross
Richard
Norris
Selke
Vezina
Lindsay

Bourque retiring after finishing 2nd in Norris voting (1st AST) in 2001 is the most recent example I can think of.

What a career. To step in the league as an 18-year-old is tough enough to do but to do so as a 2nd round pick is almost unheard of. It looked like his career was going to be derailed by injuries but he somehow became better than ever. What a beast. I know Patrice will never read this but thank you nonetheless. One of the greatest Bruins of all time and seemingly an all-around fantastic guy. Best of luck in retirement, it is well deserved!

I'm certainly not a Bruins fan. But I have begrudging respect for their old core with Bergeron, Rask, and Chara.

Enjoy retirement, Patrice. One of the best all-around players I've ever seen.

I think if you're going to officially re-name a trophy, this may be the one. He's a recent player who broke records winning it, fans will know who he is and the newer generations can learn about him. They'll have access to the videos, hockey cards, essentially everything.

As a fan of a team that Bergeron has crushed in the playoffs multiple times, guy is a model human and player. Legend.

Wonder who gets the C next in Boston, do they give it to Marchand or go younger and give it to one of the younger the team committed guys Pastrnak/McAvoy

I think its time to Selke is renamed to the P. Bergeron Trophy
I don't think we need to go that far. It's not like it was named after a comparable player who Bergeron outshined. It's named after a guy who started managing a team when he was a fresh teenager.

Great career. Great player. Enjoy retirement! It's amazing how many Selke winners have either won a cup or came close. Just goes to show you these players are very valuable.

Tough when the league loses guys like this that are universally liked. Hard to find people that don't like the guy.

A couple decades from now, his greatness in this era won't be appreciated to the degree it should. Everyone will be all gaga about how awesome Crosby and McMuffins et al. They'll look at his offensive numbers and shrug, not realizing they're shrugging off one of the best players of all time. Someone who absolutely deserves to be respected amongst those others.

Just a dude who knew how to get it done. Incredible career, great person and role model. Good luck in retirement

As a Flyers fan, one of the few bruins that I have respect for. Great player, one of the best of his generation. Those are big shoes to fill...how about we trade you Coots at the TDL?

A couple things I remember about Patrice Bergeron:

1. He's one of the few (only?) players to win the World Championship Gold (2004) before winning the World Junior Championship Gold (2005), thanks to the lockout.

2. I read an anecdote somewhere (I tried finding it and couldn't) about him training with the team at camp and his general leadership style.

The team had just run up and down a hill a bunch of times and the guys were all lying around on the grass taking a breather.

Patrice Bergeron stands up and says "Well, I'm going again." and starts running up the hill, and the team wearily gets up and follows him.

The exact type of player and leader/person (based on what we know of him) that any hockey player should emulate. Incredible career that looked like it would never get started due to the early career injuries/concussions.

On the hockey side of things, this is a big blow for Boston. I don't know how you replace a guy like that.

He can’t hurt us anymore

Being a likeable Boston Bruin is his most impressive achievement. I don’t think I’ve met a single hockey fan who dislikes Bergeron

Warrior. All-time great in our generation. Im glad I got the privilege to watch him growing up.

Stanley Cup champ
2x Olympic champ
World champ
- Triple Gold Member
World junior champ
WCoH champ
6x Selke trophy winner - league record atm
A whole shit ton of other awards

Hes going out a winner of everything. Now hes a legend. He will be a first ballot HOFer. Congratulations on an all-time career to Bergy and Bruins fans who got to cheer him on over the years.

Fun fact is that he is the only player who has won men's World Championship gold before winning WJC gold.
