Mittelstadt is absolutely not a 1C. Outside of his hot start, tbf, he’s been struggling to even do what a 2C should for Colorado. There are plenty of real reasons to carp about Buffalo’s management without making things up.
I wasn't a Mittelstadt fan at all...I'm glad they traded him..i never ever thought of him as a 1 or 2 c though many fans have...he's a #2 in colorado...whatever we shipped off ROR and Eichel
...two pieces not easy to acquire

The more i look at Cozens advanced stats, the more i think that maybe he's more of an energy third line winger, rather than an actual top six C.
his 31 goal year seems like it was an anomaly, super high shooting percentage that one year while all the other years he shoots at only 9%, like, VERY consistently at 9ish percent... when you only put 200 - 225 shots on goal at 9 percent you got a 20 - 23 goal guy (ish).
He's not great at the faceoffs and doesnt seem to produce even though he has strong 5on5 corsi (relative to team mates) , oddly, the one year he scored 31, he had horrible corsi numbers... which makes me think he was used as a triggerman.
he's still really young so who knows, maybe he has a Necas like trajectory in the next 2 - 3 years.... both fast, taller, good frame players who were drafted as C's but play Wing...they're also both primarily north-south type players.

Sabres are the most frustrating team in the league now that Arizona is no longer an NHL city. Every time I get optimistic about them they fall off a cliff and prove they aren’t even on the tracks. It’s like players go to Buffalo and they stop competing. There’s no drive from any of them. Coaching changes never work. GM’s, trades, drafting in the top.. nothing works. It’s like they are cursed.

If the Edmonton Oilers taught me anything during the 10 consecutive years they missed the playoffs it’s that you never get optimistic for a team mired in that kind of misery until they actually make it. There’s no looking forward to the future until the future actually arrives and you start making the playoffs.

Personally, I don't think Buffalo should make any moves. Let's see if they can run this shit all the way up to Game 82!
Dude, have pity on us. Although I just want our stupid owner to fire the idiot GM and give the team to experienced pros, but he imagines himself as a great POHO and thinks that he is the smartest, the result is obvious.

You fire the current GM and install the right GM who has a plan and he then installs his head coach of choice.

You trade fringe players who are UFAs this year and next. Ultimately you take one of those amazing LHD and you trade that for a player of a similar ilk to play on the Right side or a C. If you don’t believe Cozens can help this team you move on but generally anybody 25 and under you keep. Add one or two character guys just don’t fall into the trap the TML did by overpaying or sending valuable draft picks to other teams to add that character.

There has to be an understanding with the owners if your the new GM that you will spend to the cap ceiling especially if the team sees improvements. There just has to be some sort of vision.

They have to make some sort of a move.

Buffalo needs to acquire a couple of veterans that have been around and seen it all, to settle things down. Players that are even keel, and hard workers to set an example emotionally and physically how to best survive in the NHL day to day.

They don't have to be top end players, 3rd liner / 4/5 defenseman are fine, as you don't want to pay too high a price when your team is rebuilding and needs to keep most young assets.

There's only been one constant throughout this drought.

We don't need to keep most of the young players, some of them need to be traded and vets and good established players added, our rebuilding is taking forever and will never end while we wait for all these young players to grow up (they may not grow up), we have too many young players now and there are just as many more in the AHL.

Told one name to watch out for in Buffalo is Michael Rasmussen. They’re not the only team chasing him either. With his contract, no trade protection and how he’s playing, if he really is on the market, and seems he might be, you can bet more teams will be calling.

Imagine him and Thompson out there. It would make the Sabres harder to play against overnight. That’s for sure. It’s also their ultimate goal making any moves. They’re just too easy to play against.

On the other side, DET would have to really like what they’re getting in return, because it would be puzzling to trade him now, just as he starts showing how good he’s gonna be over the next 5+ years. Especially signed for 3 or 4 more at $3.5 AAV. 25-32 is the prime age for big men, as they settle into the league. It’s where we see big men become very productive. Especially if they have hands, and he always has. Confirmed by anyone, after what we witnessed a few times this week.

If they move him, the stat watchers will be absolutely confused by how much DET will get in return for him.

Those who watch him actually play the game, understand why teams would be very interested these days. Lots of people think he should be full time in a Top 6 role. Including some in the DET org. Not just to help slumping lines improve (with the space he creates) as Lalonde uses him.. Then puts him right back in a defensive role 2 games later. He has to be frustrated more than anyone else too, but he’s also become a very professional, trusted player.

There’s just not to many 6’6” players who can create turnovers, and move like he does down low. That net front assist the other night for example.

Don’t be surprised if he’s not the player Tampa is “stupid after” this season. His age and contract being what it is. Just don’t know if they have much to give these days. Plus with no trade protection, teams like Buffalo, Calgary and Winnipeg can bring a different dimension to their lineup, with term and a good AAV.

It’s not the first time his name’s been going around recently either. Heard it out West working WHL evaluations 2-3 weeks too. There’s some smoke there for sure.

Love your detailed posts as always, but I don't really understand the Rasmussen tire pumping. He's big and hardly ever plays like it, I don't see him winning a lot of board battles, and he still has a tendancy to get knocked off his feet pretty easily. For the past couple of seasons he'll have about a two week period where he looks like he's finally putting it together, but it either disappears altogether or some freak injury happens and it's back to square one.

I do agree he's a proper trade piece, but I don't know if I personally lose sleep with him going elsewhere. If he can be used in a move for Byram and lock up that left 2D, then I say go for it.

Byram? No, of course not, the value is not close. Samuelsson maybe, but not Byram.

I don't think it'd be one-for-one and I'd be fine with Detroit adding, but why wouldn't it be in play?

Bull. Getting more Kyle Okposo types isn’t doing shit for this team. It never has. We need more veterans *that are actually good hockey players* to fill holes on this roster.
