Told one name to watch out for in Buffalo is Michael Rasmussen. They’re not the only team chasing him either. With his contract, no trade protection and how he’s playing, if he really is on the market, and seems he might be, you can bet more teams will be calling.
Imagine him and Thompson out there. It would make the Sabres harder to play against overnight. That’s for sure. It’s also their ultimate goal making any moves. They’re just too easy to play against.
On the other side, DET would have to really like what they’re getting in return, because it would be puzzling to trade him now, just as he starts showing how good he’s gonna be over the next 5+ years. Especially signed for 3 or 4 more at $3.5 AAV. 25-32 is the prime age for big men, as they settle into the league. It’s where we see big men become very productive. Especially if they have hands, and he always has. Confirmed by anyone, after what we witnessed a few times this week.
If they move him, the stat watchers will be absolutely confused by how much DET will get in return for him.
Those who watch him actually play the game, understand why teams would be very interested these days. Lots of people think he should be full time in a Top 6 role. Including some in the DET org. Not just to help slumping lines improve (with the space he creates) as Lalonde uses him.. Then puts him right back in a defensive role 2 games later. He has to be frustrated more than anyone else too, but he’s also become a very professional, trusted player.
There’s just not to many 6’6” players who can create turnovers, and move like he does down low. That net front assist the other night for example.
Don’t be surprised if he’s not the player Tampa is “stupid after” this season. His age and contract being what it is. Just don’t know if they have much to give these days. Plus with no trade protection, teams like Buffalo, Calgary and Winnipeg can bring a different dimension to their lineup, with term and a good AAV.
It’s not the first time his name’s been going around recently either. Heard it out West working WHL evaluations 2-3 weeks too. There’s some smoke there for sure.
