I like Vatanen but I want no part of whatever contract he'll get when this one is up. Preparing for that eventuality is smart.

My feelings exactly.

Want him on the team this year, but am okay with parting ways with him at the conclusion. Don't really want him back after this, unless he takes a paycut.

I also assume we'll be a bigger cap team in several years and I'd rather not use a lot of money on a 30-something Vatanen, that's already had multiple concussions (2 or 3?) in about a year.

It's funny, because I find myself saying the same things about him and his next contract as I did about my reasons for not wanting to re-sign the guy he was traded for in the first place.

Still would like to keep him for this year and don't really care if we lose him for nothing, if we're in the playoffs in 2020.

Yeah, I mean, if you want to nitpick, I think it's fair to say they had enough leverage to get Nashville to take the 55 pick, instead of 34. But negotiations happen between people who have professional relationships. Sometimes you do a guy a minor solid, even if you're a competitor. Especially if it's a mentor.

As for me, this still doesn't seem real.

In terms of actual super-stardom and popularity among fans of other teams, this may be a bigger deal than when we traded for Kovalchuk. I mean, it's a toss-up with Hallsy, but still, seems earth-shattering for our franchise.

We got several "solids" from Poile since I don't know anyone else who would've given up a 2nd round pick for Brian Boyle but Shero was able to get one from Nashville. I think Ray just sent back the favor and again, if that wasn't the case, giving up the 34th instead of the 55th is the price you pay 110% of the time when it's the biggest asset your sending when you're gaining PK Subban.

I thought 34 was a low price to pay. I didn't in my wildest dreams imagine them trading Subban away without getting a 1st of some sort.

That's exactly what I said and couldn't agree more.

I don't know anyone who would've thought that we would be able to add PK Subban, a legit all-star dman who's only 30 years old, for the 34th. a borderline NHL'er, a prospect and a 2020 2nd rounder.

I mean with the amount of talent sitting there at 34 you sure could make an argument it was a first round pick talent wise. Then again they just traded back so obviously they didn’t care.

With Hall on the last year of the contract that #34th pick becomes irrelevant when added into having drafted 1st overall. You take a shot into the end zone and hope for the best this year because there's no way you can tell me that a team with Hall, Hischier, Hughes, and Subban can't make a deep run into the playoffs if they get good goaltending.

(Edit: Thought I was still in the Hughes thread which this was intended for. We’ll chalk it up to too many high numbers on the team between Hughes and Subban in such a short time to take in )

It’s been a while since we have had an 80's numbered player
