the brooks orpik from 15 years ago would be perfect

On a one year deal as an example of how to clear the porch and a guy with a ton of post season experience, he would be a good add even if for no other reason than to be a mentor. Like a Brian Boyle. We aren't a Cup contender next year, and he would be long, long gone by the time we would actually compete.

In any case, it doesn't have to be Orpik, just someone who plays like that. And it doesn't have to be a young guy to build around. A cheap, one year of a guy like Brooks would be a good thing IMO.

Subban is going to have a monster season he’s going to have a lot to prove and he’s the type of person I think that will raise to the challenge. I think the connection to Newark will be a huge factor in this too with the type of charity work he does.
I think the fact that he's the big fish in the pond again will also help him.

Brooks Orpik of 15 years ago (maybe even 10-12 years ago) wasn't the worst defenseman you could ice. You wouldn't want him on the top pairing, but he'd be fine as a PK specialist or bottom pairing guy.

But like many defensemen of his type, and we've seen plenty of them either come through this organization either past their expiration date (Volchenkov) or go from decent to well past their expiration date (Colin White), he got old early and didn't age well into his 30's. It's happening to Justin Braun right now too and he's only early 30's. It's also happening to Vlasic from the Sharks, but he wasn't anything close to a Brooks Orpik type defenseman before his decline.

Yeah it's remarkable how little we've given up to have both Hall and Subban on the roster, many teams would have gutted another area of need in order to do so or overpay in draft picks

Though the patience of a GM can make a fan base anxious, this weekend is precisely the sort of opportunity where the wisdom of such patience makes itself known

Absorbing the full salary hit on PK made all the difference here

Can I also add how amazing it is to finally be hitting on late round guys, and how much that totally changes your asset pool? Davies was a 7th rounder and developed into a legitimate prospect with trade value. We've been sorely missing that for so long.
Ya the 7th rounder was a key component of the trade. Stung a little actually.

I still cannot believe how little we gave up for Subban. I get that he's not the Subban of say 5 years ago but man, this was a heist. We capitalized on Davies' fantastic year, dumped Santini who seemed destined for waivers or a permanent press box seat, and two picks. It's really just a fantastic move all around.

also Santini is signed for two more years at 1.4 mil. So net on total the cap hit for the next two years is +7.6 and PK's contract only has three years left too. Giving up Davies/#34 is sad but if this helps Hall stay it's more than worth it

Davies to me has value but between him and Walsh, I'd rather Walsh. I'm glad we flipped Davies though, kids gonna be a player.

I feel PK's gonna have an up year this year, then stagnate back to what he was in NSH the past season.

I loved both they guys games and production but Walsh is producing at a slightly lower rate while being a year younger and on arguably a worse team, I see both being successful in the league.
