One of Vatanen, Severson or Subban is going to be a 3rd pairing Dman...

I am not seeing how these pairing are going to work

Smith-Subban
Greene-Severson
Butcher-Vatanen

Greene-Severson
Smith-Vatanan
Butcher-Subban

Greene-Vatanen
Smith-Subban
Butcher-Severson

???

Who's killing penalties? From the looks of this, one of Smith or Butcher is going to have to be a top 4 PKer?

Doesn't seem like this is a good fit...maybe more changes to come?
I had the same question, who's gonna be on Pk unit?

Greene obviously, and then?

Anyone know Subban history on the penalty kill unit? Could be wrong but I'm pretty sure he played sometimes on the pk with Montreal.

man...i get disappointed when another team makes a move i wanted the devils to make, but articles like these are an incredible reminder that SO MANY things have to go right for a trade to actually go down. GM’s, owners, players. and not just from the two teams involved, but all the others competing- the article said 4-5 teams were in the mix for subban...so you have to multiply those SO MANY things by 4-5 and your odds of making a deal plummet even further.

framed in that context, the hall and subban trades were absolutely incredible

Apparently of all the teams in the mix we were the only ones willing and able to absorb the entire contract.

It's interesting Shero talked to Boyle too (about Subban), wouldn't that technically be tampering? It would be in the NBA where Magic gets tampering fines just for praising another player :P

Hockey players have problems with other hockey players all the time. It's a part of sports. Heck it's a part of life. Everyone here has worked a job where they didn't like a co-worker. It happens. But you'll notice who gets reputations and who doesn't. The Sharks were a disaster in the locker with Marleau as captain. He leaves to the Leafs then gets traded to the Hurricanes. Not a peep. Subban on the other hand despite Brian Boyle and Taylor Hall giving ringing endorsements of him to Shero, will always have to answer to whenever a teammate didn't like him.

That isn't to say Subban is an angel. He's been prone to bad penalties and playing practice like it's a game and hammering teammates. But it's the kind of thing everyone ignores when the teams are winning, and become issues when the team is losing and people don't want to blame themselves.

When Subban retires it will hopefully be with his name on the Cup and I hope it ends up with New Jersey. I was hoping Montreal and Nashville but both teams lost the plot. Feels like NJ is writing their's and wants Subban in it. I like that

Exactly, tg. Somehow you still are our best analyst.

I really thought subban was a pipedream, and that trouba was our best bet.

The physicality, the leadership, the skills, the charisma, the steadying influence on our blueline, the ability to be a mentor for high-talent players.

It's really a perfect fit. More so than on any trade I can think of in devil's history since broten.

It's amazing how much more people were speculating we would have to give up and some actually wanted to give up for Subban (i.e. Severson plus). If I knew the price was going to be this in the end for Subban I would have been beating the drum to get this done for months too. He's always been one of my favorite non-Devils but I figured the price would just be too ridiculous with his contract like it is for most d-men.

Played 1:30 per game this season, but 2:40 last year, and over 2 minutes in each of the previous 3 years.

So he has played a lot on the PK.

Good so they'll still be fine with the big four playing PK (Sevs probably fourth in that rotation).

Isn't the contract the reason why he was available? Because of that I figured we were in a pretty good position to get him fairly cheap. Didn't think this cheap though.

I'm sure they did want a first-rounder back, it helped our #34 this year was seen as a first-round talent, although Nashville didn't prioritize it as such immediately flipping it.

Greene will play most of the lefty minutes, but I figure they would like to get some minutes out of another lefty. They had little interest in giving Butch time there last year. So I'm not seeing that, but would they give some minutes to the rookie? I wouldn't be surprised if he gets a taste.

And Mueller is still in the back ground.

Vat or Severson is going to have to switch over at some point with the roster as is. PK would be just as likely a time to do it as any.

Again, the organization knows they need to add a larger top 4 dman on the left side.

I don't see Vats and Butcher both being here next season (2020). One of them is getting moved at some point (or just letting Vats walk, but that's less likely).
