Prospect Info: Owen Beck

Beck had a pretty good first game with the Steelheads last night. He didn't pick up any points but was strong in all zones on every shift, and generated chances throughout the night. Coach Richmond relied on him heavily as he took 28 of the teams 63 faceoffs (45% of the teams faceoffs), and went 18/28.

Beck doesn't wear a letter but he is definitely a leader on this team. At one point during a stoppage on a goal review, he called the five guys on the ice over to the bench and asked the coach for the coaching clipboard. He then led an extended discussion, pointing to the clipboard while everyone listened intently. The coach did not get involved in the discussion, he let Beck run this.

Steelheads beat Erie 3-2 in a shootout. They were outshot and outchanced but had better goaltending in this penalty filled game. Del Bel Belluz (44th overall in '22 to Columbus) and Hardie (undrafted overager) scored the regulation time and shootout goals.

What killed Mete also is that he kinda never got better...
As with many prospects under our single strategy for everyone coaches he got worse. The messing with guys and pushing effort over skill and strategy is fine for some third liners, and Norris trophy guys can survive it, but many just fail. Giving guys one sheltered year before expecting them to play a mature NHL style just makes it worse.

If the team is bad develop players and lose. If the team is good don’t play guys in the NHL until they’re ready. Simple, but not simple enough for the previous regime.

Beck is basically like Bob from ReBoot(1995) when he visited the all mighty "Super Computer" for a minute and came back to save the day lol.
Beck is just back from his visit to "Super Computer" NHL taste and everyone's like "Teach us." Lol

Thx for the write-up.

Just wondering how Beck was deployed. Was he on an offensive line? Did he play on special teams? If he was on the PP, was he on the first wave?

Also wondering what his total minutes were and if they topped any other player on his team.

Cheers for using a Reboot analogy for a hockey player.

When there was a poll as few weeks ago asking what where the good moves from the new admin, the only draft pick I selected was Beck. Not that the others can't be good as well but Beck appears to be a can't miss prospect.

The guy sounds very smart in his interviews. I foresee him becoming an elite 3rd line center, which is better than just being an average 2nd line center by the way.Carbonneau is in the hall of fame. A lot of great offensive players aren't.

He played in all situations. First wave of the powerplay with DelBelBelluz, Hardie, Lavoie, and Del Mastro. On the PP he took the right side faceoffs while DBB took them on the left. He PKed a lot, as they were short handed a bunch of times. He usually had about two shifts per PK. His line started the first and third periods and overtime. The Steelheads were short handed to start the second and DBB/Hardie started the period. In OT they went with three pairs of forwards in rotation. He was out there to start and end OT and got three shifts. The other two pairs got two shifts each.

They don't track TOI stats in the OHL but I'd say he probably led the forwards in TOI with more than 22 minutes. The overtime and all the PK probably pushed his minutes up in this game. In a normal game I'd guess he'd be 18-20 minutes and among the team leaders in TOI for forwards along with DBB and Hardie.

DBB and Hardie are the top offensive line but they also turn the puck over more and get more offensive zone starts. Beck is trusted with the defensive zone starts.

Safe to say, the Steelheads won’t be getting a call from the Habs about how Beck is being deployed. This will do wonders for his development.

If this is the way Beck is utilized game in and game out, he may be ready to turn pro next year. But, one step at a time, it’s a long season.

Will be interesting to see how many points he ends up with. Hoping he reaches top 25 in the league.

Turns out that Beck does indeed wear a letter, but only on the road.

At one point though, and as I said before it's understandable, but he will have to rack the points. No matter the role you play in the NHL, D+1 rack points in juniors.

meh... how much he scores in junior is pretty irrelevant.

if/when he makes the habs, how he produces and performs is all that really matters. Much prefer the kid continue to focus on improving and being the kind of leader/multi-dimensional player that he has shown to be then he start trying to emphasizes the stat column in the OHL.

Beck had such a good rookie tournament and positive camp, that it would surprise no one that he takes another big step forward this season. He's also decided to focus more on the game by putting his university courses on hold:

Beck had a 93 per cent grade average in Grade 12 at Philip Pocock Catholic Secondary School in Mississauga. His grades included 96 per cent in advanced functions, 93 per cent in university chemistry, 94 per cent in kinesiology, 91 per cent in calculus and 93 per cent in university biology. Beck said he’s going to put university on hold this year to focus on hockey.

Everything about this player exudes the profile of a bona fide, reliable, future NHLer.

“Owen Beck is a 200-foot player,” Martin Lapointe, the Canadiens co-director of amateur scouting, along with Nick Bobrov, said after the draft. “Plays the right way. He’s a student of the game. He’s a good student at school. He does good things on the ice. He’s got A’s at school, he does A things on the ice and it reflects on his play. Everything is detail oriented. He’s been the best faceoff guy in the OHL. Competes, can skate, can make plays, supports his defencemen really well. He’s below the puck all the time. He just plays the right way.”

Just love this player's profile. So many attributes, so mature, playing a key position and killing it in many ways.

In history, in percentages, name me the players that do not have a great D+1 but come in and produces at the NHL level in a way where he's expected to be a top 6 player?

In the draft lead up video the Habs did Gorton pointed out that most good NHL role players were productive in the lower leagues, so he cautioned against drafting guys who can't produce thinking they could be really good bottom players.

I agree with Gorton. Look at Carbonneau, he was a big scorer in junior. You don't draft a kid who scores 5vgoals and 15 points because you think he will be a great 3C shut down guy, you still go for BPA and that means grabbing as much skill as you can without giving up other important attributes.

Just picked up tickets for tomorrow's game against Oshawa. The Steelheads have real trouble drawing fans, so they have lots of promotions. 2 for 1 for tomorrow's game. My son and I are sitting in the second row behind the players bench. He'll be wearing his Suzuki jersey and Habs baseball cap, so he'll probably catch Beck's attention.

If he's not close to or above PPG this year, it will be a bit disappointing.

Define not great.

And do we include D+2 as well ?

Why can't he just be a great 3rd line player though? Carbonneau was inducted to the hall of fame as a 3rd line player.

I think Beck will be the player Louis Leblanc should have been.

Not a lot examples, but Josh Anderson is an example of it. That’s just quickly off the top of my head without much thought

and.... they drafted Beck. So i would suggest that means they saw enough from his game to bet on him with a pretty high pick.

and then we all saw a first-camp display of a young player who looks to have a very high probability of becoming an NHL regular, giving the org. an initial validation of their selection.

I too agree with Gorton ;)

no thanks. do your own homework. But I promise you, you'll find one...

edit. changed my mind...
go look up Pacioretty's D+1 season, and look even closer at the guy who finished ahead of him on his team in scoring...
then go look up another recent Habs captain, S.Weber, and his offensive output/productivity in his D+1 season... and there too, look up another former habs D man, Captain Kelowna himself, who outproduced him...

I'll take Weber & Patches over Gorges & Palushaj myself, but that's just me.

Do you really think I wanted you to look it up? That was an expression that meant that guys that will do what you are saying are a minority. And then some. To every rule though there are exceptions.

Yet...Patch? Point per game Patch? I've seen the guy play. Every game. On the wings of Palushaj and Porter. Line was dominating. But I have no idea how relevant Palushaj stats are....that's not my point.

My point isn't that a top scorer in Juniors will be a top scorer in the NHL. How dumb would I be to think that? My point is that to be a top end player in the NHL you most likely than not need to be a top end producer in juniors.

True. Good example. But even if you'd give it much thought, it's not the majority.
