Prospect Info: Owen Beck

I just saw where he's playing tonight, what a class A move by management and or coaching as I just assume based off where he was born he at the very least likely grew up watching the leafs so I really like that they did that as a reward perhaps for his impressive showing to date.

If not and they just opted to play him no matter what NHL team is was, then my post was a waste but if not then I'm glad to see it. We'll see how the season goes, I badly wanted us to take Goyette there but it's not like I see many of the non Hab prospects so unless they are facing a Hab prospect, I don't have the time to watch/read about them.

Pretty interesting, Beck went to French immersion and can somewhat communicate in French. He's also been training in Montreal for the past few summers already.

His agency is based in Montréal, so he's used to visit the town every summer.

I bought tickets to the Steelheads game on October 7th in order to watch Beck play. With the way he's been playing and with Suzuki injured, Beck will probably still be with the Habs!

What a beast. Wow. He is definitely showing that he can be more than just a 3rd line center. Hopefully, he can be an Anthony Cirelli for us.
Cirelli is really good. I'd take a guy who can center the second line of a cup winning team any day. At the same point in their careers though, Beck is showing more offense. Im going to temper expectations, but he's been a revelation.

Even if he "tops off" as a Danault that is still a very good player to have. I would have personally gone for Firkus over Beck and wasn't really sold on the Beck pick, but he's playing like he could make the team right now.

Danaults a bit of a unique player. The physical strength, willpower and skating really make him who he is as it allows him to use his defensive IQ way to his advantage. It's why he didn't look near NHL ready until he matured. Beck though, already has enough IQ that he doesn't need the physical advantages. I think my biggest surprise is that IQ's there on offense too. I'm just happy we're finally drafting players who have at least one thing they have over everyone else. You can usually describe NHLers by just a few defining traits, which makes them able to assume a set role.

He probably can play in the nhl and not look out of place in terms of just keeping up with the pace, but the habs should really take their time with this kid. Such a mature thinker on the ice for an 18 year old. Super impressed
If we weren't already sitting with 5 lines, I think he could make the team now.

Hadn't watched him play before we drafted him but he's been a revelation, very well rounded pro game for an 18 year old. He will go back to junior and he should but I now fully understand why in that Habs draft video the Ontario league scout Matt Turek said he "would pound on the table for Beck at 26"

Great pick, he's gonna be an NHL player.

I trust management to take the best decision in respect of Beck, whatever it might be. There is no reason to berate anyone for holding contrarian opinions about the best path for a young player, it’s par for the course on a fan forum.

What matters is the optimism a lot of observers are showing toward the player which, let’s face it, is not something we tend to see a lot of when it has come to Habs draft picks in past years, so excuse me if I choose to enjoy it for however long it lasts.
Well said. My points exactly.

Yeah i think i might catch some OHL games this year, where does the steelheads play? Hershey centre?

I wanted Brad Lambert with the 26th pick - but to get Mesar then Beck a few picks later, is far and beyond amazing.

oops - i rarely go to mississauaga - im a strictly Oak-Mil-Bur dweller..!

I'll even go to Hamilton if need be.,

Anyone have the Habs prospects on Mississauga / Hamilton?
I live in Hamilton and saw a bunch of Xhekaj and Mysak on the Bulldogs last year

On Beck, I’ll try to see him if he’s in Hamilton or Niagara. I am excited to see how much of a stride he takes in his offensive creativity this year

I hope he not like other prospects we've had that look good, but never develop passed that point, like Mete, Bournival
Don't rush him in. That's basically what killed Mete; he had to adjust to merely surviving at the NHL and never developed his offensive game while being too small to handle defensive assignments.

Bournival had multiple concussions though, that's not really his fault.
