Isn't a new Danault with a better shot and hopefully more offense.... a Bergeron?
Plus a pretty large gap in offensive IQ and playmaking (between Bergeron and Danault) but honestly Beck has mirrored Bergerons early career pretty strikingly so far. I actually think he could play this year and do something not far off what Bergeron did in his rookie year but there's no need to rush him and we don't really have a spot in the roster.

The main focus should be to develop his offense. I want him to become top 6 material. If he fails, then he can always "settle" for 3C. At any rate, there's still a long road ahead, and lots of development to happen. Let the chips fall where they might be.

Yeah agree. From everything I saw I'm fully satisfied he's an excellent pick choice. All the checks marks are there to become a new Bergeron or in between with Danault (with a better shot). The only thing to improve is a stronger more mature body and experience. In 2 years he's gonna rock!

I always hate to jump the gun for fear of turning into an overconfident hawker like David Pagnotta. :sarcasm:

But, the last time I was this impressed with a young player joining the Habs was Suzuki.

I just love how responsible Beck is and seems to almost always make the right play or to choose the most viable option. And then seeing him unload his shot yesterday made me realize that he has a lot of facets.

So much fun to have a player like this in our ranks. Lots of teams must be biting themselves for missing out on him.

Great points.

The fact the Habs had 24hrs to deliberate on who to pick with the 33rd pick also says a lot. They got to see the dust settle on draft day, likely heard other teams talk as well.

It’s the pick that likely had the most thought put into it other than Slafkovsky.

It's crazy... he's already NHL ready. Trade a few useless vets and let him start the season here. It would send a great message down the organization. No matter how much of a logjam we have, if u prove urself, you force us to make changes to reward you.
I'd more easily agree if he were a winger. I think we have at least 4 centers better than him. But if there are injuries, 9 games might work out ok. I wrote elsewhere I think we should sign him to reward him for his camp. It is common to do so for the first round picks, and he is a virtual-first.

Does Beck not have to be signed for him to
play 9 regular season games? Mind you, the way he’s going, they might just sign him before the end of the preseason.

A lot of scouts and draft rankings had his teammate Del Bel Belluz ahead of him as he produced more pts and had the offensive C role. Habs scouts obviously did not fall into the points total trap.

Play him with Dach and let him take the draws. Nothing to gain to play Armia, Byron or Hoffman instead of Beck.

Think Beck make WJC team?
If he plays this season like he's playing now and they don't mess with his minutes, definitely. My only concern is that I feel they're gonna give him the tough defensive minutes because he's on the same team as Del Bel Belluz

I think the Habs can have a say in that. His coach even said that when teams communicate with him, it's when they send the player down and tell him (the coach) what they want the player to work on.

Yeah, but it's not like DBB isn't also a drafted NHL prospect, so we'll see.

Way too many people want instant gratification

This is a common feeling when you see a prospect playing as well as he has in the preseason.

However, the differences between Beck and other preseason standouts are two-fold:
1. he's not being sheltered... he's actually thriving (so far) matching up against the top lines and outplaying them.
2. His two biggest comparables, O'Reilly and Bergeron, pulled off the same thing that he's doing right now and went on to be 2 of the most dominant defensive centers in recent history. They both dominated in their 1st preseason, showing clear and obvious attributes that can better the team (FOs and defensive play). Both these players were not supposed to crack the lineup but forced their way in. Didn't hamper their careers at all.

I think that's why some fans feel differently about Beck than they do a KK, McCarron, Poehling, and other players who looked really good in the preseason but were sheltered.

I still think we have too good of an opportunity to not rush him. We can easily send him back down so he can hone his offensive game, while still icing a team that's good enough to help the young core produce and grow, but bad enough to get a top-5 pick this season.

Too much of a log jam up front with NHL contracts. Use this year to boost players' value and trade them out to clear room for next season or let them expire at the end of the year. If we open up space (or there are injuries) we have young players in Laval I'd rather start working in to the lineup (Ylonen, RHP, Heineman if he says in NA) than an 18 year old with two more years of junior eligibility.

Regarding your first point, he faced the devil's B team and I believe the Dach line was facing the devils top line. He has yet to face a real NHL team and he has yet to play a regular season game, which is a big level over pre-season game action.

Regarding your 2nd point, it is highly unrealistic to expect Beck to follow in the footsteps of two of the great 2-way centers in the past decade. At this point in time, Beck is a lot more likely to follow in the footsteps of De La Rose than of Bergeron's. There are also not many instances in history of 2nd round picks playing in the nhl at 18 (for good reasons).

Also unlike Bergeron and O'Reilly, Beck missed a full year of development.

Maybe Beck could survive as an 18-year-old in the nhl, but he's unlikely to be able to improve much on his weaknesses. The reason Beck wasn't ranked higher was because scouts weren't sure about how much offense he had in him. Playing in the nhl at 18 is definitely not the best way to develop a prospect's offensive skills.

Yep. IMO he needs at least 2 years in the O. He might not be his teams 1st line center with Del Bel Belluz still there. But, DBB is a november birthday, so in 2 years he will be in the AHL and Beck will be the clear cut 1st C of his team. Those 2 years are crucial in my eyes, he needs them to develop his offence. Hopefully he takes off this year, but we'll see what his usage will be.

I trust management to take the best decision in respect of Beck, whatever it might be. There is no reason to berate anyone for holding contrarian opinions about the best path for a young player, it’s par for the course on a fan forum.

What matters is the optimism a lot of observers are showing toward the player which, let’s face it, is not something we tend to see a lot of when it has come to Habs draft picks in past years, so excuse me if I choose to enjoy it for however long it lasts.

Don’t think I posted (much) this off season but this post was too good to not comment and say great post!
