With a three-point night today, Ovechkin passed Trottier in career points and now sits at #18 all-time.
Next up is Selanne, but he is 30 points away - well, Ovechkin can also always leapfrog Crosby for the umpteenth time. ;)

Caps really struggling this year, not that weird with like 35-40% of their cap in the injury list but still. Not much going their way.. Shame they couldnt complete the comeback tonight, but at least Ovy with a goal and a couple of apples.

He got hot for a few games but father time is showing some this year. That and the Caps aren't as good.
Mostly that the Caps aren't deep enough to overcome their injuries this season.

At 37 years old he still leads the team in points and he's still getting his shots off. (6th most shots in the league)

The goals will keep coming for him but wins will be tough for the Caps to come by until they start getting healthy bodies back.

I can think of few stats more meaningless than +/-. Mario Lemieux has had seasons of -35, -18, -25, and -16 and I’ve never heard anybody ever bring it up on here.
Yea . It was brought up at the time when the Gretz vs Mario debates were raging.
And you brought it up and posted four of his plus minus seasons today.

To quote myself from another thread, here's the progression of the franchise goals record going over the past century:

DatePlayerGoalsDaysYearsWorld events (approximate)
18-Feb-22Cy Denneny2464,37611.99USSR formed, Mussolini in power
11-Feb-34Howie Morenz2471,0782.95Great Depression, Hitler in power
24-Jan-37Aurel Joliat2585,09313.95Chamberlain PM of UK, Japan invades China, prelude to WWII
04-Jan-51Maurice Richard2704,69312.86Start of Korean war, Queen Elizabeth soon becomes monarch
10-Nov-63Gordie Howe54521,54559.03MLK speech, The Beatles' first album, JFK killed, Vietnam war
05-Nov-22Alex Ovechkin787??????COVID-19 pandemic winding down, death of Queen Elizabeth

When Howe set the record, man hadn't yet landed on the moon.
Players should be prohibited of breaking the franchise goals record.
Thanks to Ovi it's almost eternal record now.

Here's three off the of my head. Just in from Sirius91 - Jersy goaltenders save percentage in games after one night off. After two nights off. After 3 nights off. Without a doubt, in this day and age ...........There are many stats far more meaningless than the plus minus.

No you don't get it, I don't hate Ovi and also don't think that he sucks as I have had him as the best goal scorer of all time for several years now but I'm a "look at everything type of guy" for each and every player.

The offensive zine start % isn't about my thoughts it's a fact, as is the more than usual PP TOI, which has been a trend in the last several seasons given his overall PP effectiveness and value.

It's not just about goals and nothing else.

And that's totally fine, and when he retires and we assess his all-time ranking we can discuss all of this. This thread is a very simple celebratory place as he rises on the all-time goal list. Not that hard to figure out why people are annoyed by your posts...

If there's a thread: "Ovechkin as a total player" or "Ovechkin vs. Fedorov all-time" where we can note Ovechkin's one sided play compared to Fedorov's Selke caliber play then flame away.

Honestly those stats are more insightful at face value than someone’s season line +/- stat without any context.

Crosby doesn’t seem interested in letting that happen again.

Even as a Caps fan, I can love Ovi but respect Crosby's skills. I just consider myself lucky to have been able to watch these two elevate the game for almost two decades.
I'm a Pens fan and at this point I'm thrilled with the level of hockey we've gotten to watch from them. Crazy they came in at the same time (Honorable mention to my underrated boy Geno as well).

When I think of today's stars it's hard because though I think McD has hit that star power level, he never had that rival that was also a terror to play from age 18 and on. It was a different feel back then.
