Wow, didn't realize Ovechkin is going to be really close to Gretzky in goals/game also.

Through 6 games this season he has the exact same stats that he had last season after 6 games.

2 goals, 3 assists and +1

He only scored 5 goals in his first 29 games last season.

Would be a historic season. Nobody scored 40 goals at age 39 before. I wouldn't put it past him to be the first, but I highly doubt it.

You'd have to think it's basically a lock. IDK if Vegas has odds on it, but if I were making the line I'd probly put it around -800. So bet $800 to only win $100 if he breaks it. Maybe even -1000

He ain't scoring 10 goals in like 2 or games. Maybe by the end of November of 2025. Canadian Thanksgiving is the real Thanksgiving, sorry not sorry

Seems like a lock, but you never know. I can't remember if there was much discussion at the end of Gretzky's career about if he could get to "x" goals or "y" points, but a lot of that could be due to lack of internet....internet existed course, but not like it is today. I mean, at the end of the 1998 season, he was 37 years old and just put up 90pts (3rd in league scoring)......you wouldn't figure he'd retire very soon....still pretty productive to say the least. At that time he was sitting at 885 goals....what chances would you put on him not getting to 900 goals before the end of his career?

The MAJOR DIFFERENCE here of course is that Ovechkin as the record to chase, Gretzky had no one to chase and no one anywhere near him to distance himself from either. For Ovechkin.....regardless of how good or not he can still be, it's hard to imagine him retiring before he breaks the record. I just think most hope it gets done before it is painful to watch. Halfway through last season it was looking like it might get to that point but he turned it around.....we'll have to wait and see how he does this year.

There is no such thing as a guarantee when it comes to sports and life in general.

All it takes is one long term injury to derail everything.

- How does Ovi looks like on ice?
- What's his skating look like?
- Did he got worse than last year?

I think he'll get at least within 5 goals of the record this year, maybe breaks it this year. There are no guarantees in life but if he stays healthy he will have the record by the end of next season.

Gretz still is. Although OV is hobbling along nicely and should go creaking by Wayne some time in 2026.

I remember someone posting the "stat padding" numbers which listed number of goals when already up by 2 or more

Gretzky had 255g when up by 2 or more

Ovechkin at 109 (this is 2 years ago so OV's numbers will be a bit more)

That would be putting wildly bad juju on it. He is at an age where you can’t take anything for granted.

He trails Gretzky by more goals than Gretzky scored his last 2 years in the league, and Gretzky was younger at the time than Ovie is now. Assume nothing.
