We need to clone this man. That is a hockey necessity.

Too bad OV does not play Canadian teams often, just three of them in his conference and he is absolutely feasting on them. :sarcasm:
Against Tor, Ott, Mtl OV scored 114 goals in 163 games, a 57 goals pace.

I think question now is if Great Eight could beat Great One's record with a cherry on top: in fewer games.
OV has 174 games to go to score 88+ goals which is pace of 41 goals per season.
If he does it - he will be done with one year to spare on his contract.

Forget about breaking Gretzky's record. I want to see him go for 1000.

With the Caps trying to claw their way into a playoff spot, not a chance Ovi misses the ASG. They need him out there every single night.

I think it would be best for everyone if they just find a loophole to let him skip the ASG.

Its lose-lose for the NHL as Ovie declining the game is bad PR, and him playing in it doesnt add much while just adding fuel for the geopolitical haters, and forcing them to make him sitout a game thats once again one less to hype the record chase.

And obviously it just hurts both Caps and Ovie either way. So who the f benefits for this stupid rule here..

Anyways, another night to remember. With the hattrick he passes once again Crosby in the alltime points to keep the rivalry fun and ongoing, is now back to +-0 after the haters pointing out his - to call him ”liability”, and ties for 3rd in the league for goals. ’Guess whos back, back again’.

Remember when the haters were only recently freaking out about Ovechkin's plus/minus?

That thread was started on November 15th when, by the end of the game, Ovi was -15.

It seems he read through it after the game that night because since November 16th he has 18 goals (1st), 31 points (2nd), 15 EVG (1st), 23 EVP (1st), and is +15 (T-1st).

He’s been coming in this thread consistently to make comments about how Ovechkin: is not a useful player anymore, hurts the Caps, doesn’t deserve the ice time he has, shoots too much, is only good on the powerplay etc.
Imagine a person having the gull to talk about a volume shooter shooting too much LOL.

Some people have 24/7 beer goggles on

And tied 8th in points, ahead of Sid "The Hart Candidate" Crosby :sarcasm:

Its been 10 years since Crosby got out of his injury troubles. Good for him, good for the game.
Many thought, including me, that he will pull far ahead in career points from OV.
It did not happen, they are still leapfrogging each other and fighting for the title of best player of this millennium :)

I think OV needs to thank Sid for this epic rivalry which fueled them both throughout their careers.

Use.the Crosby loophole. The year they suspended Datsyuk and Lidstrom for not going Crosby showed up to fulfill media obligations but didn't play.

Ovechkin's tied for 3rd in the league in goals now this year at 37 years old

1 goal behind 2nd

For almost 20 years now, the routine has been that sometimes in February unsustainable shooting percentages come back down to earth, Ovechkin quickly catches up with the goal-scoring leaders and proceeds to win the Rocket.

Rocket #10 would be very nice, just for ridiculousness of double-digit wins.

Damn. Just like that, he’s tied for 3rd across the entire league. Leads 12 years his junior Matthews by 9 goals now.

Anyone know how many times he’s been at 26 goals or higher within the first 41 games of a season?

To break the record it was always going to take a guy scoring at a high level his entire career. Scoring is up which helps as well but will other guys be able to sustain into their late 30s like Ovi?
Personally I think this is a once in a lifetime thing we are seeing. No one scores 50 goals at age 36 like this. He's a freak of nature and that is what it was always going to take.

The most impressive thing is going this far into his career without major injury, that's the remarkable part and why he is likely to break the record.

I never wanted and still don't want it to happen but I can appreciate what this is. We'll likely never see it again, though you never know in today's NHL.

Or you know, perhaps it’s the fact he’s 37 now and has just grown out of that. Seems to still love the game of hockey. Doesn’t need to act like it’s his first goal every time he scores.
This wet blanket kind of attitude is the absolute worst thing about hockey fans. The sooner it’s buried, hopefully next to Don Cherry’s stupid curmudgeonly corpse, the better.

That was explains the 9-2 score, making sense now thanks.

They trying to get to Gretzky’s goal record any way possible it seems.
One of the empty netters came on a power play, and another was on a breakaway. It's really outrageous what the NHL is doing to give Ovechkin the record. Heard a rumor the league was considering having the Caps play 5 on 3 for at least 10 minutes per game next year.
