Oh look, Hart-caliber Ovie is back.

If the season ended tonight he’d probably be in some Top 5s. Dragging the Caps to where they are right now given the comical amount of games missed from basically half their cap is the definition of “valuable.”

That being said, on this day last year he was 1st in the league in EVP (8 points up on 2nd), 2 points behind McD for the league lead in total points, and 3rd in the league at +21.

Kind of puts in perspective both how stupidly incredible his first half of last year was (at 36) and how even more stupidly incredible McDs start to this year is.

Guess you didn't watch the game tonight?

Gretzky still owns the ENG record but not for long.

Hopefully that was sarcasm on your part.
All 9 goals were empty netters. Caps are trying hard. Not Ovechkins goals are counted as Ovechkins to beat Gretzky's record. Rules changed lately.
One of the empty netters came on a power play, and another was on a breakaway. It's really outrageous what the NHL is doing to give Ovechkin the record. Heard a rumor the league was considering having the Caps play 5 on 3 for at least 10 minutes per game next year.
My sarcasm detector is clearly not on tonight, guess I deserved getting goofed on, actually had to check since I really didn’t watch the game.

Ovechkin scoring lots of empty netters lately.

I wonder how many EN’s Gretzky had in his career.

6.26% of Gretzky's goals are empty netters (56 over 894 goals)

6.70% of Ovechkin's are empty netters (59.9 over 894 goals)

If someone wants to dig into it further be my guest (ie. statistical significance), but the difference is pretty darn negligible over 1300+ games and hopefully Ovechkin ends up with > 900 goals and the empty netter argument falls flat on all acount

damn I didn't realize how many hat tricks Gretzky had, that's insane. Ovi should definitely get to 4th all time in hat tricks, possible he could reach Mario's 40 although highly doubtful in my eyes. Zero chance he hits the 50 Gretzky got. I do think if he want it he will hit 1000 goals though and that's much better than hat tricks.

That was explains the 9-2 score, making sense now thanks.

They trying to get to Gretzky’s goal record any way possible it seems.

1. Gretzky has the most ENGs ever.

2. Sidney Crosby has more empty net points in his career than Ovechkin but apparently nobody cares.

3. Being butthurt over empty net anything is hilarious.

Honestly, the most impressive stat to me is the number of GWG Ovi has in his career.

Second all-time with 124 in 1313 games (Jagr is 1st with 135 in 1733 games).

Happy New Year to all Ovechkin fans in this thread!

2022 was a huge year for Ovechkin legacy:
- Ovechkin passed Jagr and Howe and now is #2 ever in career goals
- Ovechkin now owns "most goals for a single franchise", "most road goals", "most times to open scoring", and "most shots on goal" records
- Ovechkin finally got his 9th 50-goal season, which ties Gretzky and Bossy for most 50-goals seasons ever
- Ovechkin tied Howe for most top5 finishes in goals (14). Nobody who played post-expansion finished top5 in goals more than 8 times

It seems that now Ovechkin has cleared the 800-goal mark and has nobody between him and Gretzky, who is still 88 goals away, milestones will stop coming - but that's quite wrong!

- Ovechkin is on the cusp of posting his 17th 30-goal season, which would tie Gartner for most ever
- If Ovechkin gets to 40 goals, which seems extremely likely, it will be his 13th 40-goal season - that would beat Gretzky, who has 12 such seasons
- Ovechkin is mere 3 points away from passing Selanne in career points - and 13 points away from passing Mikita, which would push Ovechkin into top15 ever in career points (assuming Crosby does not leapfrog him again)
- Ovechkin's next assist will be his 650th, which will also tie Brett Hull
- Ovechkin is 7 ppg away from 300 career ppg (the fact that 150 career ppg is enough to make one 53th all-time in ppg shows how ridiculous 300 ppg is)
- If Ovechkin post another 50-goal season, he will have the most 50-goal seasons ever - ditto for another top5 finish in goals

So we have many good reasons to hope for an exciting and fruitful 2023.

You forgot to mention that Ovechkin was able to break the late great Marcel Dione's record of 17 straight seasons with at least 24 goals, when Ovechkin had his 18th straight 24 goal season this year.
