I still think 50 goals will be tough for him to hit again this season. If he does though, that takes him to 830 career goals.

He would then need 65 goals to hit 895 over the last 3 years of his contract. (22 goals a season)

Everyone taking about how many goals over the next 2, 3 or 4 seasons and what the average is (and yeah that makes sense).

My question is, can he get to 57 goals this year, putting him at 58 more and clinch the record the spring 2024 :naughty:

I for one hate when my team scores empty net goals. Nothing good comes from that.
This HAS to be sarcasm, right? An empty net goal is one of the most important goals a team can score. It basically ends the game in your favor. The only (regular-season) goals more important than empty netters are overtime goals (for which .. oh hey .. Ovechkin is the all-time leader).

Yeah, that's why it's important to look at the facts and not just trust the narrative that the majority on HFBoards try to push. Crosby isn't all that he's hyped up to be...
Nah, Crosby most definitely is a top 10 player ever. Try to appreciate both players, both came into the league at the exact same time with massive expectations, and both became top 10 players of all time in completely different fashions. Some prefer Ovechkin, some Crosby. Personally, I’d take Crosby as I think his style is more conducive to winning playoff rounds, but there’s certainly strong arguments to Ovy.

That’s true. Having Malkin who was the Pittsburgh leading scorer on 2/3 Cups was a great testimony to Crosby‘s playing abilities. Having Kessel who was the leading scorer on 1/3 was another one. Crosby was so smart and clutch that he didn’t even ever need to lead his team in points in the winning runs. Nor was he ever asked to carry his team in the SCF.

Oh I forgot, having great teammates is a negative, and the fact that they performed well diminishes Crosby. He would have been better off not winning those cups

There's been a lot of talk about EN goals in this thread. Here's some context. As of New Year's Eve 2022, there have been 8,951 games in NHL history (regular season only) where a team has scored at least 1 EN goal.

During those games, the team scoring the EN goal has won 8,943 times, lost 3 times, and tied or OTL'd 5 times.

That works out to a 99.94% win percentage. I suspect those teams still would have won a substantial number of those games even without the EN goal (my guess - and this is only a guess - is 90%). But there's still value in scoring the EN goal, as it virtually puts the game out of reach.

I wrote an article about the nine times in NHL history (eight regular season + one playoff) where a team scored an EN goal and still lost. There were only three "real" comebacks (the other six games had weird quirks).

(Trivia - Ovechkin is "only" 4th all-time in non-EN goals with 752. He'll pass Jagr's 764 and Howe's 789 soon enough. He'll pass Gretzky's 838 right around the time he passes him in total goals).

It does, in a way. Crosby was never the guy when Pittsburgh won. He wasn’t even the closest thing to the guy when they won.

Ovi is so underrated by some people. He's on the verge of being the first NHL player to score 900 goals and doing it during the modern area where goalies are better and players are better trained and conditioned. He should be on the NHL Mount Rushmore with Gretzky, Howe and Orr.

Despite whatever theories or opinions you have about his 3 Cups, he won consecutive Conn Smythes which would suggest he was certainly the guy. Now it would be foolish to suggest he carried the team on his back, as you said he had lots of help (hence why they won the cup lol). But if this is an Ovy vs Crosby Conn Smythe thing you’re trying to push, I find that odd considering he was outscored by 5 points to a teammate, and could have also been outscored by Backstrom if he didn’t miss 4 games during that cup run. Moral of the story, great players need great teammates to win championships

There are lots of excellent arguments for Sidney Crosby. ^^^This isn't one of them.

Sid was gifted a Conn Smythe while he produced at a 65 point/21 goal pace as a minus player who didn't penalty kill and had minimal defensive responsibilities.

I could probably come up with 50 arguments that are better than this one.

It was a direct response to his performances in those playoff runs, this wasn’t my “trump card” for why I think Crosby is the better player than Ovy, and I certainly wouldn’t lead with the Conn Smythe argument to make my case, that being said your post underrates his performance and falls into the trap of looking purely at stats, Crosby was a 2-way beast for those runs and anyone who watched the games would attest. Now, I’m not really interested in a Crosby vs Ovy debate, as I firmly believe both are top 10 players of all time, and while they’re vastly different players, they’re remarkably close from a historical perspective. I’ll always believe Crosby was the better, more complete hockey player, but Ovechkins goal scoring is simply undeniable and I can’t fault anyone for preferring him

If you define "2-way beast" as tons of goals going in for both teams, absolutely. Somehow I don't believe that's your angle here though.

Kessel was robbed in 2016 and you know it.

I’m pretty sure the goals that put you in position to have the lead and force the team to pull their goalie are at least as important

I thought he was great throughout the playoffs, so was Kuznetsov who scored 5 more points than Ovechkin. Either way, we could go on forever about players who some felt were “robbed” of major awards across all sports. Again, don’t want to take anything away from Ovechkin, always been a fan of his and he’s firmly in my own top 10 all time

Yeah, nah. Crosby absolutely wasn't a two-way beast. Crosby has never, and will never, be a two way beast.

He isn't a shutdown center, and in fact has never shut down an elite player for a playoff series in his entire career. Nor is he asked to (nor should he be). Nor does he kill penalties.

Sidney Crosby simply wasn't very good in the 2016 playoffs. Ovechkin would get universally trashed for that kind of low production (again, Sid was producing at a 65 point / 21 goal pace as a minus player). A third liner on his team outproduced him despite playing significantly fewer minutes with lower quality line mates.

This "Crosby is good at defense" talk is a pandering media narrative that was invented to compensate when Crosby's offense fell off.

BTW I think Sid solidified himself as a top 10 player of all time years ago. I just don't think leaning on the weakest and most undeserved Conn Smythe of the past 20 years (perhaps longer) is the way to go.

You should present your findings to the PHWA who voted in his Conn Smythe that you uncovered their scheme to get Crosby that award. Great investigative work, Crosby has been overrated this entire time and the media has tricked us, my world has turned upside down
