What is 08 Ovechkin level defense? Is that where you're on the ice for 67 non-power play goals against despite playing in front of an AHL caliber blue line and terrible goal tenders? Whereas Crosby was on the ice for 73 and 75 non PP goals against in the subsequent 2 seasons despite playing in front of a hall of fame goal tender and a decent group of defensemen?
It’s where you float at the blue line waiting for a break out pass, are the last man back on defense, and your line is constructed specifically to account for your defensive deficiencies.

lol that's how the Pens treat Crosby - which is why he played with Kunitz and Dupuis but pretty much never Phil Kessel.

Crosby was excellent defensively. Did you watch the games?

Crosby had little to no defensive responsibilities and he didn't penalty kill either.

His supporters claimed he was focusing more on defense to compensate right when he was no longer a contender for the Art Ross (helluva coincidence), but the data shows that his deployments actually were either unchanged or geared more towards offense after that, and his penalty killing became non-existent aside from hopping over the boards after the real penalty killers got the final clear.

Actually when he started getting Selke votes and praise from respected analysts for his two way play was when his supporters found it appropriate to give him praise. Shocking.

Crosby was excellent defensively. Did you watch the games? He was in the mix for the Selke the entire season that year and finished 7th.

I guess you and a handful of Crosby detractors know more than the people who vote on these things. A miracle that the entire media conspired to vote on and discuss Crosby’s selke level defense despite him being actually really bad.

He got 4% of the votes, less than half of what a 36 year old Joe Thornton got lol. Something like 15 total votes for anything between 1st and 5th place. That's not "in the mix", that's barely "honorable mention".

You don’t get selke votes and brought up in conversations regarding it if you’re bad defensively. Pretty simple.

His career best is only slightly behind Radek Faksa's the next year, I will grant you that Crosby at his defensive peak was only slightly worse than a 3C.

Crosby was never "in the mix" for teh Selke. He got 73 votes. Kopitar, who won, got over 1100. Crosby finished 2 spots behind Joe Thornton who got more than twice as may votes.

You can get a paltry number of Selke votes pretty easily in fact, as already shown by the gulf between Kopitar and Crosby. And “brought up in conversations” by Pens fans doesn’t make him elite defensively either. This is a myth that needs to die.

He was in selke conversations that whole year.

It was brought up by numerous analysts all year. He was praised for his defensive play unanimously despite not winning the selke. This revisionist history to pretend Crosby was bad at defense during those cup runs is what needs to die.

With goal #807, Alex Ovechkin is Donald Brashear goals away from tying Wayne Gretzky.

Couldn’t think of anyone else who wears #87, sorry :naughty::laugh:

I think today is the first day where I’ve felt like 1,000 isn’t impossible. Like still incredibly unlikely. But non-zero. B/c it’s starting to feel like 50+ per year through the rest of the contract (given everything you going right with health, quality of team, and league scoring) isn’t 100% beyond the realm of what is possible in this world.
