Isn't that what makes him special? Also we have McDavid and soon Bedard. I think we'll be fine.
He will beat it and you canadians lose hahaGreat achievement. He has been an absolute beast ever since he joined the league and I salute that. Best pure scorer I have ever seen.
However, unpopular opinion incoming, I don't want him to beat Gretzky's record.
Yes, I know, I'm a Gretzky fanboy.
What?! Say it isn't so! Wasn't Backstrom supposed to retire because of the injury?! Thought it was just a matter of time before they announced it. Ovechkin has been playing way better once he got away from Backstrom. Last year Ovechkin was scoring like crazy and then when Backstrom returned his production started to limp. This year Ovechkin has been absolutely carrying the team. Backstrom is nothing but a detriment to Ovechkin at this point.Holiday break is ahead, Becky and Willie are close to be back
I think only the haters will bring this up but if he finishes with 900+ career goals it won't matter one bit.802 is a great accomplishment, but dang does he ever rack up the empty net goals over the last two years at an unparalleled pace in hockey history. Which is too bad because it isn't the vintage Ovechkin that got him to 800 goals in the first place. That's 6 already this year and it isn't even Christmas. 9 last year, and I am pretty sure that was the record. Last year that was 20% of his goals. This year, so far with 6 out of 22 goals it is 27% of them. A bit of a nitpick, but still.
Yeah but Crosby has just as many empty net points both this year and the last 2 years as Ovechkin. And 2 more empty net points than Ovechkin over their whole career. And Crosby has done it in way less games. And Crosby will most likely pass Gretzky as the all time leader in empty net points too. The difference is just that Crosby passes to Jake Guentzel (who scores the goal) in order to avoid any criticism, because nobody gives a shit about Jake Guentzel or anything that he does.802 is a great accomplishment, but dang does he ever rack up the empty net goals over the last two years at an unparalleled pace in hockey history. You should be careful with Big Phil. He's the only one opposing Ovechkin's dominace and breaking Gretzky's record that I respect. I thought that Ovechkin would break the consecutive 30 goal season record for sure for many years. But Big Phil schooled me on that one. He said there was no way it would happen several years in a row, after Ovechkin had his 13th 30 goal season, his 14th 30 goal season and his 15th 30 goal season. Turned out Big Phil was right and I had to eat crow big time! There's a reason why Big Phil is a top 5 hockey guru here on HF Boards.I think only the haters will bring this up but if he finishes with 900+ career goals it won't matter one bit.
For now they have to cling to something I suppose. For the past 5-7 years it's been "Ovechkin is on the decline and will hit a wall."
Since that hasn't happened they trot out the ENG narrative.
Nah. They’ll focus heavily on the cup wins because ovi was always surrounded by a plethora of hall of fame talent.I think the next thing beyond the ENGs that the haters will focus on is how many games it will take Ovechkin to reach 894.
I'm guessimg a lot of the Gretzky fanboys hope he does it in more games than it took Gretzky.
Of course they'll be glossing over the fact it was much easier for Gretzky to score during the majority of his career.
Mark my words that this will be their main area of focus beyond the ENGs.
Based on what you're telling me it's because he doesn't want it to happen. You should be careful with Big Phil. Big Phil still doubts that Ovechkin will pass Gretzky in goals and it's the only thing that still worries me when it comes to Ovechkin passing Gretzky in goals.
Yep. Even if we give him the low end at 20 that gives him 822 career goals. He would need to average 24 goals a season over the last 3 years of his contract to hit 894.He'll get about 20-25 more goals this season, so he'll end the year at around 825. He passes Gretzky at 39, almost guaranteed at this point. Even if he got injured, I'm sure he'd stick around longer to reach it.
I think Kuzy wanted badly to be part of history. Assisting on a big milestone goal is better than scoring by himself. I think it's the only case where an assist is better than a goal, right @Midnight Judges ?Wtf was Kuz doing?

2. Selanne - 132
