I posted this on the Habs board:

The reason I love Ovechkin is because he genuinely loves hockey. He leaps up like a kid when a teammate scores, he declines penalties on the other team because he didn't feel it was fair, he taps Carey Price on the pads for robbing him on a last-second shot, he goes on an epic celebration bender after winning the Cup.

If Ovi didn't play the game, he'd be the guy on HF posting to himself on the GDT. He's the ultimate hockey fanboy. We are genuinely lucky to be watching him.

He's also pretty good at scoring.
Great post, Im gonna steal your thoughts lshappy :naughty:

Just noticed, if secondary assists were awarded to a second player who touched the puck before a goal, Ovechkin would have 5 points game.
Oh yeah, neglected bastard stat of points family.
We missed important OV milestone exactly one month ago when he "scored" his 248th secondary assist and entered elite top-100 secondary assistants club :sarcasm:

That's remarkable, considering he is the best goal scorer of all time. He suffers from that in these counts as He cannot get awarded for 2nd apples to his own goals.

Then, when there is that loud cohort always pointing out Ovi's empty netters, I made sudden realization, that same group never critisize or even less subtract any assist points of any player not named Ovechkin.

Scrappy, semi-accidental, EN-2nd assist is just as good point as any when it goes toward a legendary playmaker's total career count. It is only a goal scorer's fault with EN-points, and only if he is the best and greatest goal scorer of all times.

Yeah, OV will lead in Empty Net Goals eventually.
His generational friend (with competing milestones thread) is already all-time leader in Empty Net Assists,
its not advertised though :sarcasm:

wow. Never saw this. So much hate from sidfans on Ovi's ENGs and zero mentions about Sid's ENAs all time record. Absolutely ridiculous.

Yep, as he should lead eventually as the best Goal scorer of all times. Total empty net count is inevitable aspect, and how I'd said it - necessary requirement - for his total greatness. To be undisputed in every way possible he needs to break The Great One's record also in this category.

Not going to his generational friend now, just noting that he has his fair share of these valuable ENGs (and related apples) too in his tally. In some other thread that fact would really need some advertisement tho, for the fairness and to promote usage of same measuring sticks for all players.

But the place for that ad isn't here.

Great post. Something I would like to add:

As a Russian hockey fan growing up in the 90s you almost never saw the stars on international stage if not for the olympics. And when they showed up in St.Petersburg it was a whole shitshow. Year after year I was disappointed by the commitment of those who were there and those who didn't even show up at all. Ovechkin ushered in whole new era because he ALWAYS showed up when he could. Even if he was only able to play a few games because he came in late after the PO. He was the first superstar who cared that much and with him Kovalchuk, Radulov and co. And even after he finally won Gold he continues to show up for his country.

As you say, he simply loves the game. And I really can’t understand people who thinks that he don’t care… it's so obvious that he does (maybe more then almost anyone).

Ovechkin definitely loves his country. (sorry, haters)

I just wanted to say already how amazing of an achievement this is. I remember when Gretzky got 802 and there was faintly something of similar importance when Ovechkin got 802. He is a true inspiration to me for his love for, and excellence in hockey. As a rookie in 05-06 he seemed exciting in a unique way. Sort of like Pavel Bure was for me in the day, but with more power perhaps. I sure hope he gets to 895, but that's still a long ways away.
