I remember a while back where he started slow and it was being said he was washed. YEARS go by and he's still a goal scoring machine.

It's going to be a weird day when he retires. What a player.
It was march 6th 2021 when this classic thread was created: What probability do you feel Ovechkin has to catch Gretzky now?
And here's part 2 of it: What probability do you feel Ovechkin has to catch Gretzky now? (Part 2)
At the time this thread was made Ovechkin was sitting at 713 goals and needed 182 goals to break the record. After this thread was created Ovechkin has scored 87 goals in 134 games, which is a 53 goal pace over 82 games. If Ovechkin hold the pace after this thread was started, Ovechkin needs another 147 games to break the record. That would mean Ovechkin passes Gretzky in his 1452nd game, 35 less games than Gretzky played in his career.

I checked and apparently he's 291 from being first since 05.

I tried finding the all time hit leaders and the only sources I could find only keep track from 05+

Hits only started getting tracked around that time, which is why you only see guys like Clutterbuck at the top of the list. Just like ice time only got tracked around 1998.

Not really

I gate when people pull the adjusted by era shit to make someone look better

What he did is amazing

But he didnt dominate his era like gretzky did

It's not to make someone look better, it's to account for changes outside of their control. Nobody is arguing Ovechkin is a better hockey player than 99, not sure what your point is. 99 fell off a cliff as a goal scorer by age 30. Ovechkin continues to score at 50-goal pace.

exactly. Gretzky was the best player in the NHL for how many seasons? OV was the best for what 1 maybe 2 seasons?

Please keep up. Nobody is arguing 8 is surpassing 99 as a hockey player.

lmao That's fine, you act as if gaining your respect means something.

leading your team to Championships is a thing is every sport but not hockey? sorry but all of the top 4 have won a cup atleast 2 times. it means more when your the leader of your team leading them to win

look at Joe Thornton never winning will be something he will always be known for and he got chirped even by Torts. along the lines might be the best player to never win anything.
The only time in my life that I have ever seen a player singlehandedly lead a team far in the playoffs is JS Giguere in 2003 and the Ducks lost in the finals that year. Jiggy was beyond amazing most incredible goalie performance i have ever witnessed. That Ducks team had no business being in the finals.

Other than that every cup winner was a team effort. Crosby had a lot of help during those cup runs. Ovechkin had a lot of help in 2018 etc.... if you want to judge a players playoff career you have to judge how they played individually instead of how the team performed overall. So many things have to go the right away in order to get to the cup. You have to have every one step up. You have to have bounces go your way. Refs make calls in your favor at critical stages of the game. There is just so much that goes into winning those 16 games that you can not blame one player for not "leading" their team to the cup.

Its a damn shame the Thorton never won a cup. But it is not a knock on him in any shape or form. At least not in my opinion.

That's how breaking the record was perceived. Unimaginable.
Very true and no hate on the posters in that topic.

At that point in time Ovechkin had 427 goals in 684 games. He was not even half way to Gretzky!

That was a .624 goals per game pace and 51.2 goals over 82 games.

Since then he has scored 373 goals in 621 games.

That is a .601 goals per game pace and 49.3 goals over 82 games.

Ovechkin's consistency over that time (age 29-37) has been truly insane.

I remember reading a thread a few years back in here that someone started asking if Ovechkin could catch Gretzky. The thread was from 2013 when Ovechkin had 400+ goals.

The OP got ripped and then a mod locked it saying "no chance" or something along those lines.

Wish I could find it now to see who created it. 😂
Shoulda perma ban the mod for locking it

That’s just the nature of time man; proves us right or proves us wrong.
Can't really fault anyone in that thread anyway. It was nearly impossible to believe Ovechkin would maintain his production for this long. That's Gordie Howe type stuff.

I'm a huge fan of Ovechkin, but every year this topic would come up and people would break down the numbers as "If he scores 50 goals x amount of times, and then drops to 40 for a couple seasons, and then is scoring in the 30s, he might get close" and I'd just think there was no way.

Now here we are. 800 goals in his career, with a couple more years left. He might actually hit 50 this year. That's insane.
