Yup. I do wonder how many goals Suter cost him?Props to Ovi. Incredible goal scorer. One of the greatest to ever do it.
I don't want to take anything away from him, he deserves all the recognition.
One small thing though, let's not talk about Gretzky like there wasn't 2 versions of him. Early thirties while playing in the 90s he had major back problems. He wasn't the same player, there's no getting around that. It is what it is. So when talking about the back half of his career, acknowledge that it was going as far as being said that he may never play again before he decided to give the NHL another 7ish years.
I'm going with zero.Yup. I do wonder how many goals Suter cost him?
Sure he was already slowing down but not that drastically.
Wayne’s goal scoring pace did drop after that.Yup. I do wonder how many goals Suter cost him?

Remember, Gretzky broke Howe’s record at the age of 33. Once the chase was over, his goal scoring slowed down considerably. If Ovechkin passes 99, I bet his pace drops off quite a bit after that.
I expect him to leave the ice mid game and go home forever after passing 99 to be honestRemember, Gretzky broke Howe’s record at the age of 33. Once the chase was over, his goal scoring slowed down considerably. If Ovechkin passes 99, I bet his pace drops off quite a bit after that.
They were all on entry-level contracts and won four Cups on entry-level contracts (or their 80s equivalents). As soon as they became too expensive, Edmonton started to ship them all out, one by one.How do you assemble a cap compliant roster with prime Gretzky, Coffey, Messier, Kurri and Anderson? The Oilers were stacked, that’s how they won 4 Cups in 5 years.
Gretzky alone would command max salary, which is $16.5M under the current CBA.
Evidence? Anything to refute my points? Not even close.
Gretzky is the best ever, but the run and gun 1980s suited his style of play perfectly. It was the perfect storm.
If Gretz played today he'd be winning league scoring titles by a considerable margin; but not to the extent he did back in the day where he had more assists than the next highest player had points.
No way.
Yea that was bad. Comparing to Stamkos instead of giving props to Ovechkin's for his accomplishment that only 2 other players in NHL history have done is very disrespectful.Lol anyone watching the 1st period intermission on CBC/Sportsnet? Instead of celebrating OV's accomplishment of 800 goals, it turns into "well he's out there cheating for offense", "Stamkos transformed into a 200ft player, OV never did", "if he changed it might have led to more cups". As a Canadian, it's absolutely embarrassing how OV is viewed/portrayed here. Like wtf does Stamkos have to do with anything? I guarantee if Stamkos, or any other Canadian, hit 800 goals then everyone here would have wet pants. I usually never pull the "xenophobia" card but man it was just embarrassing. Honestly reminded me of some people in this thread. Sad and embarrassing.
I feel like a lot of people don't realize we witnessing a historic feat/player right before our eyes.
Zero? Cmon lol. The man had back surgery and almost retired. I'll go conservative and say 50.I'm going with zero.
There's nothing to really indicate anything other than age and a less favorable goal scoring environment slowed him down.
His goal scoring had been dropping off steadily for 3-4 seasons and that trend simply continued.

If Ovechkin had never won a Cup then I would say - yep it's a big deal and it affects his legacy and his overall career achievements. (and I'm a big Caps fan and I have complained more than once that I think they should have won 2 or 3 Cups during his career).Funny that they actually spoke of what they have been seeing eh?
Also there is a reason you usually never pull out the "xenophobia card" and another ones comment should and doesn't change that reason does it?

Hundreds of players have won multiple Stanley Cups.
Only 3 players in the history of the NHL have scored 800+ goals.
