Most employers actually do try to prevent that. And those who don't are not very good employers. Companies have programs to help employees having issues and a good team leader will try to help an employee having trouble which usually will show with the quality of his present work versus his past. It's not the 50ies and 60ies anymore. Yeah some companies will fire people on the spot but it's not as common as it used to be. In many fields they'll try to help you before firing you.

It should even be a bigger priority for NHL teams as they invest a lot of money on their young players and at the end of the day those young players can't go work for another team and are the responsability of their current team. The assets of a hockey team is mostly the players. It would be like a company like Apple not caring if there's a problem with their last iPhone.
My point is employer can't force someone to get some help. There is a part where people are accountable for their behavior and not everything could be attributed to "bad development".

I don’t like speculating on things like this either. But just looking at the way Galchenyuk’s career projected, it was a pretty dramatic drop off from 2016-2018 and everything that followed after. It wouldn’t be a shock to anyone if there was something much larger at play there.
Sure. But we have to be careful here.

And some of that can be attributed to the injury and our usage. I never understood why we didn’t play him or trade him. Just a total waste of an asset.

And I also don’t think Therrien was the right guy for off-ice stuff. The guy who could’ve REALLY helped with that was Larry Robinson and we didn’t return his phone call.

Agreed.

But, this is why you don’t bring in a bunch of bullies to develop kids. This is why you bring in guys like Robinson.

Having Therrien as his coach sure didn’t help.

What do you mean by protecting? Hire some bodyguards to follow him to prevent any bad decision from the kid? I understand what you're saying, but there is a limit where it's on player's shoulders to decide to behave like a professional athlete.

By being drafted by the Montreal Canadiens you instantly achieve rock star status... before you learn to play the guitar. This is something that need to be considered integral part of a prospect development in this market.

While the final decision about anything and everything will always rest on the player shoulders there is plenty of thing that can be done to provide a smoother transition between a being "junior famous" to "Montreal famous". That is, if you don't decide to ignore the whole thing like Bergy and the bicep bros did during the last decade.

The full nearly 10 minute video is on YT. Very nice quality for a 480p video.

Galchenyuk, Beaulieu, Scherbak, Poehling all taken in the first round
Disingenuous…

Do we really need to go through the list of 1st round picks post Bob Gainey in 1973 - covering 8-GMs including 6-drafts during that period under legendary Sam Pollock, with GOAT development guru Claude Ruel around till 1993

Maybe he drives like he skates. He can’t steer the wheel in different directions when he has hit foot on the pedal.

Pretty sad to see Galchenyuk’s career and life spiral out of control like this. Hopefully he gets the help that he needs. It seems like he had his head straight when he signed with Toronto…guess not.

That 2012 draft was awful. It’s remarkable that Galchenyuk even with all his struggles is still 5th in points and 3rd in goals scored in his draft class.

What does this has to do with anything? Should the Habs have guessed he would be arrested 11 years after his draft?
He was always known as not being the sharpest tool in the shed, just like Nathan “keg stand” Beaulieu …

Dipsy doodling is fine & dandy but it’s a team game and best players tend to have off the shelf learning ability to go with varying levels of “pure skill”.

Once you recognize a prospect lacks the ability to translate learning-to-execution need to cut the chord
