I'm not as surprised by Calgary... They needed Huberdeau/Kadri to bounce back significantly to be better and both continue to play well below what they were paid to bring...

The oilers, on the other hand, are a hot mess. Gotta wonder how much longer Holland holds out before making a drastic change. Ship is sinking fast!
The oilers should be going to a team like San Jose and unloading bad contracts. Use picks as currency to offload. Montreal might be another trade partner as well.

They have to be in win now mode.

Ekholm seemed like too little too late. To be perfectly fair it seems the flat cap really screwed them and Toronto’s plans for ascendance.

How long is McDavid out for?

Do they have any pieces the Habs should want other than Holloway and future 1sts?

Top8 draftees who pretty much never play their D+1 in the NHL:
-Dman, it's like ~95% of them.
-HSHL players don't usually turn pro in their D+1 (it's related to requirements to be able to go back and graduate at a later date.)
-Russian players under contract in the KHL (they just can't).

For CHL/Euro forwards drafted top8, it's pretty much a coin flip if they play their D+1 in the NHL or not.
Goalie? f*** those guys right? (they are not common enough in the top8 to really bother with them).

Ultimately both Jiricek and Slaf ended up following a path that is considered the norm by the NHL as a whole.

The path is dependent on the prospect’s readiness and performance. Nobody is saying the Habs shouldn’t have given Slaf an audition and allowed him to earn a spot — the problem is precisely that he didn’t earn a spot and certainly didn’t keep a spot but was kept up anyway.

And we know this because his performance in his D+1 is the single worst of that cohort* (top drafted forward, rookie in NHL in D+1) in over 20 years. And they didn’t send him down and still refuse to send him down.

There is no comparison to be made between Slafkovsky and Jiricek. It’s silly to even try. Slaf’s development cannot be compared to Tage Thompson or Draisatl either, for similar reasons.

Get a NHL job and become a reformist, until then: it ain't how it work over there.

Fun game in Toronto tonight. Leafs tie the game 17 seconds into the third period. Sabres come right back to take the lead. Buffalo is becoming fun to watch with all that young talent. And as I was typing this Leafs tie it again.

Edit: And the Sabres retake the lead...less then 4 minutes left
