I still don’t get this unless his agent has some contingency worked out with a team that would take some of the sting out of it. That’s a whole lot of cash to forego for a player with so little NHL time, who hasn’t shown anything.

Yeah where his NHL career seems to be headed I'm not sure if this is ballsy or just plain stupid to walk away from 4.56M like that but I'm really leaning towards him being just plain stupid on this one. I can't even imagine walking away from 4.56M dollars. Good luck to you dude.

Well we all saw how Drouin walked away from Yzerman and saw his career blossom....
Never mind.

Man while Yzerman was a great competitor as a player and i loved the battle between Colorado with Sakic and Detroit with Yzerman but man as a GM it's painful to watch him he's not anywhere near Joe Sakic. DeBrincat will be the next Jeff Skinner. Not a bad player but ...
I think he did a pretty fine job in Tampa. Sakic has spent a decade in Colorado and went through multiple rebuilds. And if they don't luck out and get first overall in the draft to pick McKinnon then who knows, probably no cup too.

Zadina decision is bold to say the least. He's essentially just thrown away set for life/never work a real job in your life money for the chance to rebound his career. Hope it works out for him.
I imagine he still makes some good money in hockey, whether in the NHL or not... But 4.5 million USD....my goodness

I get the feeling that either he felt bad about commiting himself to the contract and then admitting to himself/realizing it's not for him, or he might've done sonething regrettable and agreed to the quid pro quo.

Haha..

Drouin's career didn't go as planned for him but at least MB set him up financially for the rest of his life paying him 33 million dollars. Huge life changing gamble for Zadina here but the best of luck to him going forward.

Maybe but considering where his NHL career seems to be headed right now walking away from 4.56 million dollars doesn't seem like a smart life decision for him but it's his life so all the best to him I guess.

He probably cleared at least around 2.5 mil, if not 3mil so far. With that much money you can set yourself up for life if you're smart enough.

He might've regretted commiting to it.

I'm really curious to know his thoughts on why he did it. I'm also really curious to see if he'll walk away completely

Walk away with 2.5mil in the bank or endure something you know you don't want to do, so that you can almost double that amount? Not everyone would chose the latter.

Of course he could do better - but at the very least I'm sure he can still pull in 1 mil per even if he goes to Europe...so I won't feel too sorry for him.

I think you missed the episode where Zadina requested a trade.
His contract became the anchor that kept him in the Wings system (and he already stated he wasn't going to report to the AHL.)

With that contract out of the way he is free to sign somewhere for 775K or whatever and start anew.

Love this kid. Can't wait to see what he does in the NHL.

Things like this make you an instant favorite. This is what made Lafleur how beloved he was. It was more than just him being amazing on the ice. He made time for the people.

I think Caufield has that, too.

Im betting he ends up in Boston on a 1yr 1M$ deal... And has a monster season.
They've got the Czech connection, strong internal culture & opportunity/need for him to play a top 6 role if he wins it at camp.

Would easily take a flyer on him if we could jettison 2 of Hoff/Armia/Ylonen, but without sending some fwds elsewhere, agree that there's no fit.

I'd rather have Ylonen than Zadina. Because if Ylonen ain't producing, he's still a useful player to have in your line-up and he can be in the Bottom-6 or get time in the Top-6. If Zadina ain't scoring, he's useless.

Well, same train of thought then. Not the career but the place.

A few weeks ago, Internet Hockey: LAK is going after PLD because Kopitar is on his last contract year and won't be re-signed so PLD is his replacement.

LAK today: re-sign Kopitar and give him a full no move clause that is applied backward to the last year of his contract.

Danault officially LAK 3e center for the next 3 seasons.
But he's living in LA, on the beach, making millions, about to go on a cup run and nobody knows who he is. It's the new dream of today's NHL player and it's frightening for Canadian teams imo.

It’s not new, it’s been the dream forever, but started becoming easier to achieve post 1994 lockout, as players started getting more & more autonomy. Hence, why Tavares is the only real top end player to ever have chosen a CDN market via free agency

How did this guy even go 6th overall ? I don't know anything about the player.

He definitely believes in himself. It’s a fine line between confidence and arrogance though.

I hope for his sake that he can salvage his career. That’s big money to give up.
