Oh man, Vancouver actually came back to win in 3rd. Lol

They were playing like shiiiiiiit! But, it is Columbus and Merzlikins is a crap goalie. He gave the puck away for the game tying goal (2-2). Brutal.

Also, Provorov looks to have broken his thumb.

No team rebuild with just two seasons at the bottom. Rangers threw Gorton's rebuild plan out of the window when they fired him in 2021 and opted for a retool via UFA/Trade...a retool that already need a new retool because almost half the line-up is over 30.
Ya, strange turn of events.

Another solid game by Kovacevic.
Most ice time on New Jersey and on the ice with 2 minutes left in the game on a 6 on 5 in a 3-2 Devils win.

I guess we didn’t need a 6’5” 220 lbs right handed solid stay at home dmen making 766K.
For a team supposed to be looking at the long game what was the rush to move him in the first place?
When Savard goes we are all going to be talking about our need for a big strong stay at home D on that right side.
I get that Reinbacher can take up that mantle but I was expecting him to finish perfecting his NA game in Laval at least to start the season.
A position that has gone from weak(ish) to very weak. Mailloux is struggling with the Rocket and Barron certainly isn't consistent enough here.

HuGo have to be kicking themselves.

They obviously had Redenbacher pencilled in to join Habs D at some point this season - he was afterall the best D in Laval as a 19yr old by a country mile at the end of last season

The injury could not be anticipated..

If I were in charge, I'd have kept Kovacevic and Lehkonen
Lekhonen without a doubt, did this org not learn from Mike Keane fiasco? Never deal players who have 100% motor, their values can’t simply be measured by stats…. Lekhonen’s work ethic would’ve been contagious to this young team and there were other ways of fitting in his cap hit

They had to sell Lehkonen because they simply had to get their hands on Barron, the defender who is afraid of his shadow. :sarcasm:

I felt Lehkonen didn't fit our timeline but for a management group that kept saying they wanted a good culture, I'm not sure what their plan was with some of these players they acquired. You typically want even MORE motor and spirit if you're going to be under-talented...

I wasn't against Lehkonen and liked Barron from my viewings during his D-1. He had good production as well in the AHL while being in an organization that, up to then, seemed to have a solid pro/amateur development group. However, seeing him incapable of making good decisions around his net, skate with his head down and be overpowered despite being 6'2" is just frustrating considering they traded such a high compete player. He had chemistry with Suzuki too before the trade, after a rough patch in December (and obviously October when the whole team was brutal). I guess one thing is that when you trade good players like Toffoli and Lehkonen, part of the trade is also finishing lower in the standings. That doesn't absolve the return, you still need to turn the picks/player into some form of NHLer. The organizations that come out of their rebuild and compete are those that "win" those at some point.

Them having Reinbacher penciled making the team might not have been the right thing to do.
It feels like this was an attempt to prove they made the right decision by picking him instead of Mitchkov.
I don’t know how many minutes he played per game in Europe, but playing 18 minutes for 82 games in America is a lot different.
What if he sucked and struggle?
You keep him the entire season?

Agreed but Redenbacher dominated in Laval and was their #1Dman - was relied upon in all game situations as go to.

When prospects have that level of success teams nowadays tend to have them play on their NHL teams

Don’t look now, but Shane Wright starting to light the lamp.
Well, he was one of the worst players in the league up to recently. Can't imagine the bashing he would have gotten here. 1st OA pick that wasn't even a regular NHL before his D+2 and looked brutal for 1/5 of the season.

To be safe we have to wait until the dust has settled (they’ve retired from hockey and own a car dealership) before we can comment.
Height of irony to hear this from you after ripping the shit out of Slaf in his first 100 games.

I get they probably wanted to show their new toys after getting some disapproval in the pick over Mitchkov. There was no point in rushing him. You already had 4 player with less than 100 NHL games played without Reinbacher or Mailloux. You would lose Savard at the deadline to be replaced by a rookie once more, but I guess it doesn’t mattered with 25 games left

Did you say so at the time? We got Kovacevic off waivers to begin with.

As for Lek, that kind of trade makes sense given our circumstances. Baron may not pan out but it’s early. We also leveraged the 2nd from that trade into getting Hage. So I think that trade will likely wind up being worth it. We’ll see.

Lekonen would’ve been wasted here in my opinion. Better off moving him. And if you move him he’s going to get you picks/prospects and that’s exactly what we got.

If you are on record saying you’d keep Kovacevic, power to you. I barely remember him. Would he have gotten ice time here? Probably not.

IMO Savard will not be dealt at deadline if this team is in da mix… will simply be viewed as a deadline acquisition.

Yeah I wanted to mention that yesterday, but Michkov was already getting enough attention with his many assists.
Michkov has crushed it. If he’s doing this now, it’ll be scary to see him in a few years.

Wright’s going to be interesting. A little humility may have done him some good. I hope he can put it together. I hate saying talented guys just busting out. We didn’t pick these guys but that doesn’t mean we should root against them. Only when they play against us.
