But they don't have next year's first. So if they trade this first, they have no picks in the first three rounds this year and no picks in the first three rounds next year.
Likely that would be the case though the 2025 is conditional.

I have to assume it's Korpisalo + pick for new goalie. Some team wanting to send a goalie out, get a fill in, and get value back.

If they are interested in Jarry from Pittsburgh, there may be something workable there. Might be as easy as Jarry for Korpi+2nd.

Yeah. I'm not sure how feasible going after any other sort of higher priced goaltender is for Ottawa, without sending Korpisalo back the other way to backfill for someone.

It's either that...or they have to not only find a goalie upgrade, but find one on a cheap contract as well. Just adds a massive degree of difficulty and complication to the process and slims down the already tight market even further.

You mean keep doing what they've been doing? Cause it's been so successful to run with 2 mediocre goalies?
Yes, because Tavares and Marner have NMC and they cannot build a winning team with 4 x $11m dollar players. As it stands their hands are tied until Tavares cap is gone.

a few teams already have 10M+ spent on goalies, so it's not like Markstrom/Korpisalo is unworkable. Forsberg is probably tradeable without a big loss, and his cap hit in the minors would only be 1.600 for 1yr anyways.

Honestly the biggest obstacle for Ottawa would probably be whether or not he'll waive for the Senators. If he will, and Ottawa can make the money work, they may be the team with the best assets to get it done.

Many swedes have speak well of ottawa. I'm sure Alfie alone can get Marky to join.

This is 34 year old Jacob Markstrom coming off years of .892 and .905 everyone is bidding for?

Remember going into the playoffs last year when Bobrovsky was 34 and had a .901? Goaltending is funny like that.
People think goalies aging curves are the same as skaters. They're not.
People also think they can read what a goalie is from what their save percentage says. They can't.

Bobrovsky has had periods where he's looked average to bad, but he's also had periods where he's been elite and has several Vezina trophies under his belt during his career. Markstrom has done what in his career that shows he's a great goalie? Don't understand the reason why anyone would want to trade for him when he doesn't really move the needle in improving your team much and costs a chunk of your cap too.

You don't understand the reason a team would want a solid starting goalie with years of experience at the position?

Maybe ask the NHL GMs trying to acquire him then.

Ottawa needs a goalie but the 4M they are paying Korpse is a limiting factor.

Personally I think a solid RD like Matt Roy and a coaching accountability will fo farther. Ottawa is a goalie graveyard for a reason. Trade Chychrun for a depth forward and picks to make space.

Sanderson - Zub
Chabot - Roy
Brannstrom/Kleven - Bernard-Docker
Korpisalo was a terrible acquisition to begin with. It's no shock that a goalie with no starter experience and wildly inconsistent career as a backup performs poorly as a starter. Markström can also be erratic but he would likely make them significantly better.

What's so solid about Markstrom who's been pretty up and down in his career with periods of good play and then periods of not so good play. Not so different from a guy like Samsonov except costlier and older and both probably aren't able to get you through 4 rounds of playoffs.

Sorry Flames fans but Markstrom isn’t getting a 1st at full salary.

There needs to be significant retention or a bad contract coming back.

NJ might be able to do a top 15 protected 2025 1st with 50% retention.

Toronto could do 23OA with 50% retention.

Ottawa could do 25OA with 50% retention

Ottawa could also do 7OA + 25OA + Korpisalo for Markstrom no retention + 9OA.

I’d think Toronto is the best deal for the Flames.

It’s in the Top 5 of subjects this site is continuously wrong about, but people just continue to ignore reality.

Markstrom is right at the top (of the list) of every team looking for a goaltender. From Toronto, to NJ to Detroit.
