Return was obviously damaged by not having a pre-ordained contract extension. But not being able to get a single blue chip asset in this trade is pretty rough.

No 2019 1st, no top prospect, no high end roster players...

These pieces gear Ottawa up for a window 5+ years from now (IF the conditions are paid and IF the picks and prospects are developed.

I just.... wow.

I'm having flashbacks to when the Seattle Sonics traded Ray Allen in 2007. Everyone knew at that point the Sonics were gone from that city. But they at least had a 19 y/o Kevin Durant on the roster.

The Senators franchise is screwed.

I dont see how this is a bad trade for the Sens.

They got back a recent 2017 1st rounder, s 2019 1st and 2nd, 25 year old Tierney coming off a 40pt year, a 24 year old defenseman coming off a shortened 20pt year and two lottery players for ONE season of Erik Karlsson.

That forward 13some does not look that bad to me, quite good actually, (or relatively good at least)
sure the defense and goaltending is at AHL level, soooooo....T-R-A-S-H!
Looks pretty good relative to the average AHL team I suppose.

But that's the thing, isn't it? If you can't get Karlsson to agree to a pre trade extension, why not wait til the deadline? Or why even worry about sending him to one of those "shortlist" teams like SJ, DAL, VGK, TB, etc?

There will be lesser players than Karlsson that get moved for better returns at the deadline this season. Hell, SJ could move him at the deadline this season and get back better than what they paid. I just find it so very difficult to believe that what they received was the best offer on the table.
You just added reason number 2000 for why this is a bad trade.

Now Sharks can just sit and wait for a teams to go after him at the trade deadline. Will likely get more back than what they gave the Sens. Or they sign him in the best of worlds. What a win.

I imagined Karlsson brining back a blue chip talent -- Top 20 prospect not in the NHL

Wayyyyyy too much quantity in this trade, with no real quality.

Sens want to tank and rebuild. This trade allow them to do it. Its as good a package as you were going to get for a one year rental.

Dorion is going to come out and address how he clearly won the trade,

‘Look here dummies, Tierney had 40 points and Demelo had 20. Karlsson only had 62. So I matched his production and got four additional assets. You should all be happy’

I dont see how this is a bad trade for the Sens.

This is the return many here expected but there was a pretty large group of people claiming EK returns a young star like Draisaitl or Nylander.

That is why people are laughing at the value. Also the recent 1st rounder as well as future picks are likely to be late. As others have pointed out there isn't one blue chip prospects, pick or player is this package. That is a little suprising.

Lol, this may spur the Sens moving Dorion...still, they got several assets for a guy who was gone and can start moving on before camp.

Sens can fire Dorion but they'll still be just as dysfunctional with Melnyk. Lou and Trotz is a drastic culture change for the Islanders. For the first time they have stable and credible leadership
