Congrats san Jose. You now have one of the most exciting players to play the game in a long ass time and you didn't give up a roster player to get him.

You're in for a treat this season.

I must underrated San Jose more than a lot of people, because even with this trade I don't see them being a top end favorite like the Metro Powerhouses/Tampa/Nash/WPG.

In the 5th-7th best ream range as of right now in my eyes. If you're Wilson, you obviously take the risk, but if he doesn't re-sign, this trade may hurt more than people think. Still, you have to take the shot.
Then the top 3-4 teams in the west have blown a big chance for the Cup.

To break down the picks in the trade for anyone who doesn't fully know the details yet:

-The Sharks owe their 2019 and 2020 1sts to the Sabres and Senators. If the Sharks miss the playoffs in 2019, the Senators will get their 2019 1st and the Sabres will get their 2020 1st. If the Sharks make the playoffs, the Sabres will get their 2019 1st and the Senators will get their 2020 1st.
-The Senators will get the highest 2nd rounder the Sharks own.
-If the Sharks re-sign Karlsson, then the Senators get a 2021 2nd rounder from San Jose. If he re-signs and the Sharks make the 2019 cup finals, that gets upgraded to a 1st rounder
-If the Sharks trade Karlsson to the East, they owe a 1st rounder by 2022

The confusing thing here is that 3rd condition. If the Sharks make the cup finals, but don't re-sign Karlsson, what happens then? Is that a 1st rounder or is that nothing?

That's not true, you're just more familiar with the pieces you gave up and are forgetting that JT Miller was a part of that trade
We basically gave up Brett Howden and Libor Hajek + a First for McDonagh. We gave up Namestnikov and first for Miller. We paid more anyway you slice it. Hajek is better than every prospect included in this trade. Let alone Howden.

If San Jose crashes and burns in the first round and then Karlsson signs with another team...

How does the trade look then?

only way that happens is if their stars go down with injuries

don't see EK signing anywhere else to be quite honest. even if guys like thornton, pavelski, couture, burns, and vlasic aren't getting younget i'm sure DW will find another team to fleece for some young talent
