Dorion: Why would I trade with you again Doug? You traded Hoffman right back to my division last time!

Wilson: Fine. If I do that this time, and Karlsson plays for an Eastern team this season, you get a 1st rounder.

Dorion: I'm listening....

Wilson: I'll give you a 7th d-man, a 3rd line center, a former first rounder who had a poor year last year, a former fourth rounder, a 2nd in 2019, a 1st rounder two years from now, and if I sign Karlsson we'll give you more... say a 2nd rounder in 2021?

Dorion: Yes.

Yeah - this is the most surprising part. Tampa I'm sure *did* beat it, but another Western team probably could have/should have ponied up.

One thing - Vegas has (by necessity) a rather shallow pool. They've only had two drafts and they just traded one of their better prospects. Maybe they didn't want to rush a deal that was going to gut the quantity in their pool.

For Dallas... I really don't know. I can't believe they didn't top that offer. It makes no sense.

My speculation is that they didnt want to give up anything for a guy who might not re-sign. Seems like EK is taking a wait and see approach with that.

The deal also includes two conditional picks:
  • Should the Sharks sign Karlsson to a contract extension, Ottawa receives San Jose's second-round selection in 2021, which would upgrade to a first-round selection (not lottery protected) if San Jose reaches the Stanley Cup Final in 2019.
  • If Karlsson is on an Eastern Conference roster (reserve list) during the 2018-19 season, the Senators will receive an additional first round pick from the Sharks no later than 2022.
Why would a conditional pick, based on reaching the Stanley Cup Final, need lottery protection? Doesn't that go without saying?

It's a 2021 pick for reaching the finals in 2019. Sens are hoping SJ wins the cup this season, re-sign Karlsson, and then become the Ottawa Senators.

We basically gave up Brett Howden and Libor Hajek + a First for McDonagh. We gave up Namestnikov and first for Miller. We paid more anyway you slice it. Hajek is better than every prospect included in this trade. Let alone Howden.

Like I said, you're just more familiar with your guys. Tierney is a 24 year old 40 point two way C. If you get that out of Howden you're laughing. And Balcers is hugely underrated. The return by know means blew this one out of the water, especially when you consider that McDonagh came with an extra year

How do you not get even 1 of Meier/Hertl? lmfao
Because of this absolute buffoon.

To break down the picks in the trade for anyone who doesn't fully know the details yet:

-The Sharks owe their 2019 and 2020 1sts to the Sabres and Senators. If the Sharks miss the playoffs in 2019, the Senators will get their 2019 1st and the Sabres will get their 2020 1st. If the Sharks make the playoffs, the Sabres will get their 2019 1st and the Senators will get their 2020 1st.
-The Senators will get the highest 2nd rounder the Sharks own.
-If the Sharks re-sign Karlsson, then the Senators get a 2021 2nd rounder from San Jose. If he re-signs and the Sharks make the 2019 cup finals, that gets upgraded to a 1st rounder
-If the Sharks trade Karlsson to the East, they owe a 1st rounder by 2022

The confusing thing here is that 3rd condition. If the Sharks make the cup finals, but don't re-sign Karlsson, what happens then? Is that a 1st rounder or is that nothing?

So they absolutely, positively have to do something, since its damn the future, we're going for it now.

Imagine literally telling your boss to go **** himself because you are so mad about a hockey trade and just leaving work to go try to cause mayhem over it and literally nobody will understand why because you don't even live in Ottowa you're literally from Cicero Illinois hahahaha

You rambling about your uncle again?

That is a crappy return. At least the conditional for EK signing with SJS should have been more substantial. A '21 2nd? Really?

Still good. It’ll always be good. SJ could fold as a franchise and they still win this deal.

That means San Jose gave up a pile of assets to watch Karlsson skate around for a year.

I know everyone is bashing the Sens but what happens this year with SJ and whether Karlsson signs an extension matters a lot.
