Ottawa should try defensive structure at some point to support their goalies.

There are now stats available that isolate goalie performance from team defensive performance.

You should try to learn about them.

Ottawas defensive metrics have been pretty good this season tbh. I think this narrative was true in past years but I think this season it’s more on the goalies

Well last season the Sens goalies collectively gave up 34.45 more goals than was expected given the scoring chances they faced, which was the highest in the league by a large margin (second was Minnesota at 21.34).

So not just this season.

Anyone actually watching the games knows full well Ullmark has struggled on his own. He's said it himself too. He's also had some strong games where he's shown he's the guy they thought, but overall, he needs to be better.

What I find interesting in this narrative is that Swayman is playing almost as poorly according to the numbers. Seems like contradictory evidence to the whole thing. Up until recently, it was the same story in Ottawa with Forsberg playing well similar to Korpse while Ullmark was struggling.

Talbot actually had some good spurts, but he was injured a lot that year and in and out of the lineup and that seemed to really hurt him, but the team was also playing worse when he was there. He should have been re-signed before giving that awful contract to Korpse.

Great to see Korpisalo getting it back together so far, but again, anyone that actually watched Ottawa last year knows he was letting in absolute backbreakers. Team killing bad goals. Unscreened muffins being waved at. Out of position. Deep and not confident. Then there was the whole laser eye surgery and mask sightline fixing story line this off season. Ironically, he had the ability to make big miraculous saves and would impress at times, but the bad ones ate him up and replacing him for the sake of the teams confidence was clearly needing to be priority 1 this offseason and management agreed.

Shot location, type and velocity tell nothing of how predictable the play is and that’s the most important part of modern goaltending.

Those stats are for rubes.

They need to be used in combination with the eye test, but they certainly aren't "for rubes"

Why is this thread bumped after every Sens game lol. Ullmark has struggled but in the last 5 or so games he’s played well. Really think he’s turning it around.

I see some progress with Ullmark. The Ullmark of two weeks ago would have crumbled and let in a few goals after the first one. But I see a lot of shades of Korpisalo with how he held it together like a star keeper and won the game for the Senators. Honestly, I don't get anything from pointing out how one sided this trade is for Boston, so tonight's win was nice to see even if it will do nothing to get Ottawa Kastelic back.

We were told it's the best d-core in the league by the Sens Faithful. Multiple #1 defensemen.
Multiple number one D-men? Wow, that's news to me and I've seen some pretty homerific takes. We have one of the best young D-men in the league, who is absolutely a number one. Then a couple of decent 2nd pairing guys.

Can I ask where you saw this multiple #1 defensemen post(s) you speak of?

It was probably one or two posters at most you’d expect a handful. Beyond that you may have a poster or two saying something about the ceiling a player or two may have rather than where they are right now. Nonetheless these boards routinely get a small number of extreme takes being labeled as “fans” have said. As if the small number of posters here are somehow the spokespersons for all the fans of a given team. It’s really poor form and speaks more to the intellectual dishonesty of thr poster setting up the false premise.

It's equally dumb to use these people as examples then, which the original poster did to elicit a response.

Still interested in seeing examples though @Voight

At this rate, we'll be able to flip him back at only 50% retained to get the mighty Korpisalo back. #TheCupIsOurs

33 pages of sens and bruins fans trying to prove that their team won the trade

Everyone else knows this was a lose-lose trade:

bruins lost their elite tandem and sens goaltending is still trash

this guy Ulmark seems to be Jekyll and Hyde man, brilliant one game, next game he sucks.
He's been one of the most consistent goalies in the league over his career. Save % leader the last 5 years.

He's had 3 straight +.900 performances and 4 of his last 5. He's turning it around, similar to Swayman. He did have an early injury that kept him out, and he joined a new team this summer, so some struggles aren't that surprising.

I'm pretty sure it was Sanderson will be a #1, Chabot and Chychrun are top pairing D-men but this is the internet, people twist things up so it can fit their narratives.

This is still my evaluation on these players.

Sanderson is a bit disappointing this season so far relatively to his talent level but Zub has been injured and he has been saddled with Travis Hamonic a lot

Chabot is playing like a stud, top-10 in most 2-way metrics. Chychrun is also having a great rebound season, 2nd in TOI/GP on the team that has the 2nd best P% in the entire league. 8 Goals, 15 Pts in 20 games and +10

I would love to see anybody say these guys are not top pairing quality (top-64 D-men)

Bruins fans seem to love this thread and shitting on Ullmark.

Kind of bizarre considering the guy they picked to commit to also has brutal numbers this season and the trade has worked out so well for them that they’ve already fired their coach!

Both guys seem to be turning it around though, as expected.

It’s easy. You make excuses for your guy but not the other. Swayman missed camp, he needs time to get back into form. Ullmark being injured during camp and a part of the season is irrelevant.

Maybe the Sens should have hired a better coach.

Korpi is playing fine in Boston. He's let in a few softies & made some massive saves when needed.
Kastelic has been giving one of the most consistent efforts out there for Boston.

Ullmark seems (Stat watching, only watched his game against the B's)) to be on a roller coaster of playing great and playing horrible. I know when he was in Boston he was making big saves on constant breakdowns to keep them in games. Doesn't seem to be the same in Ottawa as of yet.
Swayman has been playing as good as Ullmark for what that’s worth. Neither of our starters as doing what they are paid to do. I liked Ullmark and thought he’d be great for you guys. But both are having awful seasons.
