Think there's a few reasons -

1. Debrincat is a RFA who's going to command a huge contract. Usually the second those deals are signed it's hard to trade them.
2. They don't believe Debrincat brings enough value for what he brings given his next contract will be $8-9 mil
3. They want to tank and they really like a prospect in the upcoming draft.

It's not the value that people were expecting, but I kind of think Debrincat is a bit overrated. Insanely skilled and one of the best goal scorers in the league, but he's also the type of player that has a harder time come playoffs unless he's the the 2nd/3rd wheel on the line.

Unless I'm getting things wrong, his QO is 9M. So his next deal will almost certainly start with a 9. Or a 1.

One more 1st round pick or a top prospect and the deal would've been fine. Instead it turns into a very bad deal. Now gotta hope Jirchek slips to #7.

another high profile player that returns less than what the fans of that team thought...who would've thunk it?!
By now it's clear that the only fanbase that can get away with such statements is the Blue Jackets. Because Kekalainen.

Not trying to be a homer but.... is this the best top 6 forward group U-25 ever in the NHL? I mean... it has to be at least since the cap era.. right?
The sens are a unproven version of flordia Panthers at the moment.

Unproven/less experienced version

Flordia had a great season in the reg before a disappointing playoff run.

The sens offense looks very good, can't lie. I see them battling Boston for wildcard 1 and 2 next year.

Think the Atlantic takes 5 and the metro 3 (pens, Canes, rangers)

Good deal for the Senator!.

Not such a bad deal for the Hawks either, they need to burn the house down.

I think this is logical for both teams.

The Sens still have holes (partner for Chabot/Sanderson, and is Forsberg legit?), but yeah - it's nice to see the top 6 we may have locked in for years to come, finally come together.

I thought he was RFA this year. This is great. He has a year to prove he isn't a product of Kane and earn the hefty contract.

That all makes sense, but this seems like a massive risk on a not-particularly-high draft pick. They had a whole year left on his current deal before engaging in RFA negotiations, and they're planning to tank so cap space won't be an issue for a long time... the timing is just very odd.

Then again I also don't consider Debrincat overrated, to me he's likely to be a top-5 LW in the league in a couple of years.

That is an awesome group, but I think I'd try to temper my expectations until they are all signed beyond 2023. Either way, even if they lose 1 or 2 in order to add some studs on defense, that is a great starting block for the Sens to turn the franchise around.
