He’s 24 and just went basically PPG. It’s a lot to give, but it’s a good young player coming back.

7th overall isn’t a sure fire NHL player, let alone one who ends up better than Debrincat. Seems like this trade is at worst a win-win. With the potential to make a lot of people look very silly if that pick ends up underwhelming.

I'm trying to understand this from a Chicago POV. DeBrincat is an electric, 40-goal scoring 24 year old who will still be an RFA in a year. Unless you're planning to rebuild for a LONG time he should be part of the plan.

Did something happen behind the scenes to make this make sense? I cannot for the life of me believe that they did this as a hockey trade.

Think there's a few reasons -

1. Debrincat is a RFA who's going to command a huge contract. Usually the second those deals are signed it's hard to trade them.
2. They don't believe Debrincat brings enough value for what he brings given his next contract will be $8-9 mil
3. They want to tank and they really like a prospect in the upcoming draft.

It's not the value that people were expecting, but I kind of think Debrincat is a bit overrated. Insanely skilled and one of the best goal scorers in the league, but he's also the type of player that has a harder time come playoffs unless he's the the 2nd/3rd wheel on the line.

Great trade for Ottawa. I have no clue what Chicago is after, unless they have a deal to trade into a top 3 pick.

Good trade for Ottawa, didn’t see that one coming.

I haven’t really been following, but have noticed trade rumours around DeBrincat prior to this trade. But why does Chicago trade him away while they’re in the process of a rebuild? Seems like a great young player that could be a part of their core for the next decade. Obviously going to be looking for a big contract, but why not move some of your older vets to make room for him?

Great piece for Ottawa to add to speed up their own rebuild, without forfeiting any of their young core players.

I understand rebuilding and trading a 24 year old 40 goal scorer if you get multiple top assets for him because your cupboards are bare. For 7th overall and a 2nd rounder? WTF is happening here.

People seemed shocked by this return must have forgotten a similar quality player in Fiala just got traded for the 19th + Faber

7th + 39th + a 3rd is fair value given the market set for high-end wingers

Chicago: We are rebuilding
Also Chicago: let’s trade our 24 year old super star and a 23 year old on a good contract for draft picks that will most likely not come close to equal value

Bad move imo but we will see
