The risk is locking yourself into 4 years of salary retention, losing futures (even if you get them back later it's much more valuable to have them NOW), and ending up only getting a rental for it.
There was no way around that

Koprisalo was unmovable, it should have cost significant assets to get him out even with 25% retention. They basically got Ullmark with what it should have cost to get rid of Korpisalo. I mean, it cost the Sens a high 2nd and 4th to get rid of a single year of Zaitsev at 4 million, they just ditched 4 years of Korpisalo

A buyout was the other option, and would have cost the Sens double what the retention does, and had double the amount on their cap for double the length.

It cannot be understated how baffling the Korpisalo inclusion was.

This will be the next trade to prove why the goaltending position is a joke and total crap shoot and why you should never invest big money or spend valuable assets for one. (Not saying Ottawa did in this case, it's a good, low-risk deal for them).

Ullmark was a scrub on Buffalo, then a Vezina winner, then couldn't even hold his starting job one season after the Vezina. There's a reason why Boston has had three different Vezina winners in the past 15 years. (And who would be surprised if Swayman makes it 4)?

Goalies are a product of their team and their system. They are giant, inflated, Michelin men who drop to the ice and let pucks hit them. If their team doesn't keep chances to the outside, block shots, and limit odd-mans, they are toast. I'm betting on 2.87 gaa and .900 sv% for Ullmark behind the Sens next year while Korpisalo puts up Vezina numbers in 25ish starts.

Teams make goalies, goalies don't make teams.

Boston has an amazing track record with goalies in recent history so I can sort of see why they would take on Korpisalo.

Ullmark was nothing special pre Boston, became a Vezina winner there. Not saying Korpisalo will do that, but clearly they know how to make goalies better.

Well... time to find out how much his numbers were him and how much were the environment. Not saying he is a bad goalie, but the Sens are STILL a work in progress.

.905, .915 and .917 save percentages in 3 years in Buffalo is a scrub? If so, come on down El Scrubo, we need you bad.

Ullmark had a .912 in Buffalo, a .916 in his 2 seasons as starter

Certianly wouldn't be opposed to that scrub in Ottawa, would be their best goaltending seasons since 2017

You realize Korpisalo is heading to a team that had a higher expected goals against than the Sens, yeah?

I think Boston being a defensive juggernaut is being a bit overstated. They were so good moreso because of their goalies, not the other way around. The Bruins ranked 19th in xGA last year, 22nd in SCF% and 19th in HDCF%. 5v5, their play was remarkably average.

Boston gave 748 high-danger chances against. Ottawa gave up 741.
Boston only gave up 75 high-danger goals against. Ottawa gave up 99.

The Bruins were 7th best in high-danger goals against, but 12th worst in high-danger chances against. That tells you something.

They just had two Vezina calibre goalies who play a very "quiet" game, in that they make even very difficult saves look routine (kind of like Carey Price did).

It's kind of funny how narratives run away sometimes.

Everyone thinks Ottawa's problem was their defensive play. But when you dig into it, that's not really the truth. Their major problems were:

1) Piss poor goaltending, in the bottom 3 of the league in nearly all categories
2) An inability to generate offense beyond a couple of players (they ranked 23rd and 22nd in SCF and HDCF). If Tkachuk and Stützle weren't on the ice, Ottawa wasn't scoring. Not good if you want to win games.

They addressed the goaltending. Now they need to significantly improve their 3rd and 4th lines, as well as their bottom 3 defensemen.

The Bruins will remain good, because their bet is that Swayman can do what he does over 60-65 games. And I think they're right.

But on Korpisalo, I would bet a lot of money that he's not finishing that contract in Boston. He might not even be there by the TDL next year.

Ullmarks numbers will be coming down by a lot unless Ottawa becomes much better defensively. Sens were bottom 5 in the NHL for goals against this season.

For a guy who's already said he won't sign, this is a good deal for the Bs.

They'll greatly increase Korp's value by playing him 20-30 games behind their D and get another pick from a desperate team in the future.

What people don’t get is that ullmark plays around 3 games a season so of course his numbers look great. if Ottawa plays him 60+ games behind that defense he won’t be sniffing .900
They are likely looking to play him ~50/55, compared to the 44 he averaged in Boston, with a Vezina season of 49.

Boston gave up more shots against, and had a higher expexted goals against than Ottawa last year. Ottawa just had a goalie who put up .890 and a -21 goals saved above average, he was literally the worst goaltender in the NHL last season, and his backup was right next to him.

Reason for that was just rectified.

55 game starter

Sens had an expected goals against in all situations of 246.55, 11th best in the league

Ottawa had a goals against above expected of 34.45. Dead last in the NHL by 13. They recieved the worst goaltending in the league by an absolutely gigantic margin

Boston had an expected goals against in all situations of 253.27, 15th best in the league

Boston had a -32.27 goals against above expected. 3rd best in the league. They recieved extremely, extremely good goaltending

Korpisalo had to be number one in the league at giving up the first goal. f***...i won't miss that at all. Basically it's 1-0 minimum that we'd be starting from

To make it worse, I think Ottawa's goalies let in the 1st or 2nd shot of the game a combined 22 times. And it was often not a "high-danger" shot against.

Sweeney was dunked on with this trade.

Letting Ullmark walk for nothing next offseason would have been better than taking this trade.

Even if there were no other options this offseason, they could have tried to flip him again at the deadline this year to get something for him without helping a division rival dump an anchor

Are you joking? They took on 4 years of one of the most negative value assets in the sport, a fringe fourth liner, and their own pick late in the first of a bad draft. Contracts like Korpisalo's are immovable and if they do move, they usually cost more than a 1st rounder to move. Sweeney himself has paid more than that to get rid of ONE year of Backes. So they gained a 4th line player (they now have 5 on the roster, all requiring waivers), and $1.1m in cap space.

It's an atrocious "haul." He would have been better off WAIVING Ullmark because the cap space could have been used to sign a player with a far likelier chance to return surplus value than a pick with a less than 35% chance to play 100 NHL games.

Now Sweeney has $6m worth of contracts on 2 below replacement level players from his last 2 trades. What a f***ing mess.
Wow, dude...I was disappointed too, but please step back from the ledge.

Great asset management by Boston.

Korpisalo as a backup and possible flip once Bussi is ready, would be a great cycle.
