If you're Boston, would you not have preferred what the Flames got for Markstrom?

Amazing that Calgary traded an older, worse goalie for a better return and didn't have to take back a salary dump

If you guys want to see behind the scenes of this trade going down Staios is dropping it on his onlyfans at midnight.
Would probably get flagged for assault

He never took that next step in Buffalo. That’s why he isnt still there. I actually think he’ll be just fine, but that is, and has been the concern. How much better will the results be over Korpisalo? We’ll see. Who’s numbers are gonna skyrocket in Boston btw. All goalies do playing in that system, and he’s perfect to play it.

Swayman just showed he could make those saves when they needed them most, where Ullmark didn’t. That was the difference and why he’s the one leaving town. Both piled up stats because of the system though. Just like the Vegas goalies do.

So until he proves he can do it, the questions will remain. Like I said, I think he can, and I also think it’s a great trade for the Sens, on the surface. Boston just had the quick hook, cause they had Swayman.

The results in Ottawa are what will matter and how the trade will ultimately be judged.
Ullmark is no longer in Buffalo because he became a UFA and didnt want to re-sign. He took them to arbitration the year prior and walked of his own volition.

Korpisalo didnt suck because of Ottawa’s D, every single statistic available supports that. And Ullmark’s success was not due to a stalwart Bruins team - especially not this last season. Again, every single statistic available supports that.

How would that in any way be a good outcome though
Let’s say he gets a late second at the deadline. We would have ended up dumping Korpi and just slid from a late 1st to a late 2nd. Every Sens fan would make that move.

I wonder if his agent thinks it might be more beneficial to re-sign now than possibly lose money later if he has a down year.

Some people are mad about the return???

Ullmark was the back going foreward, 30yo he only has 1 year left and making 5M? and the guy was sign as a UFA for free...
Just getting a 1st, is already a win they also get a backup which could be a 1B and a depth player. They swap backup, save 2M$ get a 1st and a depth player seem like a clear and significant win for Boston...

I'm excited that people think this is good for Ottawa... they need a win.
But is everyone forgetting that Ottawa has to give up a 1st round pick in this deal? That's a pretty major piece.

Ullmark turns 31 in July and will be basically a 32 year old free agent goalie next year. So, we are not talking about a 7/8 year extension to take him to basically 39/40. Probably have to look at a 4-6 year deal to take him to 36-38.

Tough look here. A lot of words to say I've never watched these players play.

If you told us that it would cost our 39th overall to dump Korpi (even with retention), most Sens fans would have been completely fine with that. Trading a slightly better pick and getting a starting goalie in return sounds even better.

Boston playing 8-d chess as they will buy out Korpisalo and tie up one of Ottawa 's retention spots for 8 years ;)

Markstrom trade hurt Boston's market for Ullmark rather than helped (there were people on here who thought it did the opposite) as it took a big potential partner off the table. Don't know that things ever got to any semi-serious parameters between NJ and Boston (Brodeur publicly supported getting Markstrom) but interesting to ponder what they may have been.

Ottawa is a division foe but I guess maybe Boston sees them as less of a near-term threat than other options (given the reports Ullmark vetoed anything in the west).

Kinda fun to see two troublesome goalie contracts traded in about a week.

I mean, 4 years of retention is probably worth an early second/late first

Not really. It's Boston's 1st which is late. I really don't see the value here for the Bruins. It's not horrible but pretty underwhelming imo

Unless you are rebuilding, unlikely to use up all 3 retention spots. SJ the only club out of them before next season begins. Need to wait until July 1, 2025 when Burns contract is off the books officially.

I don't think this is a bad deal for either team.
ottawa gets its goalie - albeit a pending UFA ..
and Boston gets a signed backup, slightly overpaid + a 1st + Kastelic who will probably fit into boston mould - he has size, can check and fight and fit in bottom 6, cheaply.
I think Ullmark got less than Markstrom because of his contract status

I bet Korpisalo finds his game again in a bruins uniform and is a great backup for Swayman.

I’m also not sold Ullmark will be nearly as good without such a good team in front of him. Time will tell and I hope the Sens do well
