Everyone wanted Justin Fields - we wouldn’t have been in the Wilson predicament if Paton had just taken him.

He also passed on the Vikings HC. Elway kind of threw Paton under the bus on the way out claiming how much John loved the Vikings candidate but Paton ultimately went with Hackett. If you take a look around the league, almost every rookie HC out there is doing well or has shown some progression of the team - except Denver. Paton seriously whiffed on the coaching search.

I don’t think Paton is a terrible GM, but I think for everyone’s sake it’s time to start new and clean house. I’m ready to dump all the old Elway/Ellis people and start anew. Hire whoever the new owners want so there isn’t rift and the team has a new direction and culture - because it badly badly needs one.

I do get not taking Fields though. Paton clearly knew he was getting a starting QB, whether it was Wilson, Rodgers, etc. so grabbing PS2 made a lot of sense in filling out the needs of the team. But unfortunately the Hackett/WIlson debacle is likely setting this franchise back 5+ years.

You can't make that trade without going through with an extension
Meh, you can do a lot of things in the NFL that don't completely cripple your team the way this contract is going to cripple the Broncos.

I know the Broncos were desperate for a QB but the warning signs with Russ were there when he quit on the Seahawks midway through his final season. You don't gift that guy 250 million dollars before he even takes a snap with the club. If that was going to be the straw that broke the trade, so be it.

The question Paton should've asked is: Why is Seattle willing to trade their franchise QB?

Rodgers was even more vocal about wanting out of Green Bay than Russ was about Seattle, and the Packers did everything under the sun to try and keep him. So why is Seattle not doing the same? And it's not like Seattle had Andrew Luck waiting in the wings to takeover, like how Manning was made expendable. Something is off here, and I wish Paton would've analyzed the situation a little more and realized that. No one trades a franchise QB in this league unless something is really wrong.

Wow, there just is no bottom.

Anyway, didn't have TV access to this one (thank God) but I had to run errands so I could have listened on my radio in the car, I didn't know the score but couldn't even muster the energy to look up which channel it was on, just turned it to the Wylde/Coyotes game and listened to that. That's how ambivalent I am about the Broncos and the NFL at large.

Paton is complete trash.

Traded away Von, for peanuts. Von clearly still has plenty in the tank. Should have been a Bronco for life.

Hired Hackett. Not like he could predict how bad it's been, but this was his call.

Passed on Fields in the draft. When he fell into our lap. PS2 would have been fine had QB not been an issue. Fields might not have been the answer but it would be significantly better than what we are dealing with now.

Russ trade is a complete disaster. Not even going to touch this with 10ft pole. We all know what this is, and how franchise crippling it's going to end up being.

Russ extension, no explanation is really needed. How do you give a guy 250M with basically no outs, without playing a f***ing snap.

Inexplicably resigned Gordon, after no one even have gave him an offer in UFA. How a guy with his track record got another chance is mind blowing. Not shocking how it ended.

Chubb trade. Another shitty move. Paton desperately trying to recover assets, for his Wilson f*** up.

Plus lackluster drafts and UFA track records.

Paton is pathetic and should be fired tomorrow. No questions asked. He has had least 7+ strikes. It's time.

I don't get this line of thinking. Everyone wanted a QB in the worst way and he went and got the best one he could and virtually everyone was either thrilled or at least agreed it filled the need. If you fire the guy for getting what everyone wanted because said player had a bad first season who exactly do you think will want to be part of this team? If you are a proven GM you are going to avoid the team like it's infected. Paton made a move at QB because no one wanted Teddy back. People would have been up in arms if he went and got someone like Geno Smith. He did what everyone was demanding and that extension was pretty much a given as well considering the deal they made. If he gets fired for that the whole league is going to say stay the hell away from that place for years.
Melvin Gordon on the other hand...

As you said, Justin Fields is not the answer, and Paton did well in not drafting him.

Agree with a lot of this, but two quick notes:

- Fields stinks.

- The Chubb trade wasn't a bad move, given the way the season was unfolding.

So.....the FIFA world cup.

As of yesterday, 32 games played, 17 resulting in shutouts, including 5 of the 0-0 variety. In over half the games, if a team lets up a single goal, there is no chance of winning.

Kind of a tossup in regards to which is more boring. This slop, or the Denver Broncos.

I mean there have been 2 of the bigger upsets in some
time during this World Cup. And todays games have been 3-3 and 3-2(still to be finished). I get that people find the sport boring but the difference between goals scored in soccer and hockey aren‘t that far off.

Complete opposite fanbases thought. Anglo-American Soccer fans are pathetically desperate for the sport to catch on, while Hockey fans are devoted to gatekeeping.

There's no checking, and no boards, in soccer. Those guys fall down in a gust of wind. No thank you.

I mean I’m a fan of both sports. But I find it interesting how many people watch soccer only to complain about it. If you hate it don’t watch it. I think baseball and basketball are horribly boring, so I never watch them. Just something I find very Interesting with soccer.

I’m just amazed how many US Soccer fans think shitting on all the other sports in the US (especially the NFL) will somehow win people over.

Baseball at least knows the dead time is problem and inching towards a solution.

Basketball has improved a lot since the post-Jordan dead zone. Jokic is just a dazzling player to watch.

Seattle based fan with some Russel Wilson perceptions. Russ was beloved in this city up until a couple years ago. He literally could do no wrong. Starting 2 years ago some prima donna attitude crept in and he increasingly wanted to have a strong voice in play calling and personnel decisions. If he didn't get his way he was in the media about it but not trashing mgmt or the team just wanting to be heard. Pete was increasingly wanting to rely more on a running game which really bristled Russ. Russ was noticeably losing some scramble mobility which is a huge part of his game so this compounded the situation. The question became, do you want to sign Russ to a max term, max dollar contract if he isn't going to be the offensive focal point? Add in the potential decline in his biggest offensive weapon and I believe the answer was a clear no for John and Pete.

Honestly a lot of us were heartbroken over the situation at first. Seattleites were calling for Pete's head. Now with the benefit of hindsight and the time for the front office to message this most of us get it. Everybody felt some regression was likely but I don't think a single Seattle fan saw this season coming. I also think you will see better from Russ down the road. Kid is cerebral enough he should be able to remold his game. The prima donna antics need to end though. He has someone in his ear that needs to be countered. I think the Broncos defense calling him out publicly is a good start. There is still talent there but I don't think Russ 1.0 will reappear.

I mean it’s certainly a problem but I’m not really wanting to win people over. If you like it watch it, if you don’t, don’t.

Maybe it happens with other sports, but with soccer I see it all the time. During the World Cup or some
big game, typically a final there are tons of people who watch who don’t like the sport only to complain about how boring and stupid soccer is.

I agree Fields sucks. But he is 200M cheaper and much easier to walk away from than Wilson.

Chubb was completely reactionary. If we weren't shitty and giving away our 1st this year, no way this happens. But we suck and had no 1st so we scrambled to get a 1st. Albeit a crappy one.

Gotta disagree on that one. Chubb's injury history made him a prime trade candidate. And the contract he signed with the Dolphins sealed it.
