Broncos should just take the next two Ls. Then draft best defensive player. If we're not getting rid of Russell for at least another season, just build a super defense side of things.

Trade jeudy for an early third, and use that for a QB

Start the countdown…..But here’s a fun question - 1) would you retain Wilson in a reworked deal? And if so 2) how much per year? I think most “good” backups in this league make close to $10M? I haven’t looked in a while

Ho Lee Phuk!

How much does a bad backup make and are there any teams looking for one?

Stidham makes 4m, that's more in line with guys who are clearly #2. I think Jameis getting about the same. Tyrod Taylor getting 5.5m but he's more experienced. Not too many 10m backups out there.

I don't think you can do a reworked deal at this point. This contract coming up is his big payday and the Broncos already on the hook for much of it upfront. For that reason any trade or cut and he's a massive cap hit. If he gets cut and clears then you might be able to negotiate but come on he ain't coming back on those terms. The money's gone though and the cap hits are coming. The math basically is do you think you are better off with him or without him knowing you have no real replacement in waiting. And they won't know what they get in the draft before March 21st. Tough spot but that why agents negotiate for the money in the way they do.

I'm just saying coach, I'll do the job for 1M.

As much as I think Russ is cooked, he still has completed 66% of his passes and has a 26:8 TD:INT ratio.

Gotta wonder if there's some team out there willing to trade for him if he restructures. I don't believe Payton wants him even if he agrees to that.

Most of those passes are baby passes for washed game manager QBs, though.

I'm sure your numbers would look better than Hinton in his one start, right?
Oh hey now, I made absolutely no guarantees on performance, I just said that I was bad but also had a redeeming quality of being cheap.

I did QB the better of the two local nerf teams in my neighborhood in the early 80s though. So I, uh, have some mildly, relatable skills to the profession at hand. If they were dumb enough to pay me 1M, I'd take the beating. Damage to my brain's already been done. In case you were wondering, our nerf team was better because of our running back, had nothing to do with me or the receivers. Mostly flat patterns, or options and shuttle passes to that dude.

Isn't there an injury guarantee in Wilson's contract that basically says if he's injured over this offseason an extra 30+m becomes guaranteed?

I could see this week 18 when you are fully eliminated but kinda shocking to do it when they still have an outside chance. What happens if they win unimpressively against the Chargers and some results go their way so they are still alive Week 18? Do you say with a straight face Stidham is our best option and keep him in to save a few dollars of cap space next year? And have you lost Russ and the teams faith in him by then?

I figured Russ's days were numbered but this is still pretty damn shocking. Final nail in the coffin.

Boy that contract extension is just going to be nothing but dead cap money. Wow. Might go down as the worst trade in Colorado sports history.
Has to be. I can’t think of anything that even comes close off the top of my head. I mean realistically its up there for worst trades in the history of the sport.

Yeah - I think it takes effect (and the Broncos have to decide on it) somewhere around March 5, so that's basically the hard deadline........not 100% sure it's the 5th, but it's definitely in the first week of March). They could restructure with Wilson, but I dunno man. I think Payton is honestly done with him.

Stidham is a free agent after next year, so they definitely need to know what they got in him as well. Regardless I think they need to take a QB in this draft, even if it's a backup to groom for the future. If they cut Wilson, they just have 1 QB (Stidham) in the room left with essentially a one year deal.

Don't worry, all roads lead to Taysom Hill.

f***ing awesome, love Sean Payton for having the balls to bench Russ.

He is a mid level college QB at this point. Honestly Shedeur Sanders would have gotten more out of this team than Russ. He can't read defenses and can't go through progressions to find open players. And his best attribute is his legs which aren't anywhere close to what they used to be.

Payton had to basically turn our offense into a high school offense for us to even have some slight success.

Not sure what they are going to do moving forward at QB but can't wait for Russ to not be on the roster.

Yes, you stay with Stidham. Russ actively costs us games. I can think of 3 off the top of my head that he directly cost us with piss poor QB play.

I don't care if Stidham sucks too, I just don't want to see Russ out there any more. This is the right move and you never look back on it.

I bet they trade for a busted prospect. Howell probably impressed them, if they can get him for a day 3 pick it would make sense to have him compete with or backup Stidham. I don't think Fields makes sense although I could see conservative Payton wanting a running QB more than other teams.

Probably will draft a QB at some point but so many areas they need to shore up in the draft. The OL pool looks deep, really need a long term OT solution hopefully to replace McGlinchey in a year when his cut cost goes down.
