I did my undergrad in Seattle from 2006-2010. During that time, I had two friends who consistently followed/rooted for the Seahawks. Two. Of those two, one grew up in a season-ticket-holding family, and he was the only person I knew who would consistently watch football games with me. The other buddy was a fan because his sister was dating Josh Brown, their kicker at the time. People didn't care about the draft, the offseason, personnel moves, coaching moves, etc., and this was only a couple years removed from their SB loss to Pittsburgh (you know, the one where "the refs stole the game"). The general consensus was "Seahawks suck, couldn't tell ya a thing about 'em beyond that".
This was also the same time that the SuperSonics drafted Kevin Durant and re-located a year later. Very, very few people were upset by it at the time, even though it was clear Clay Bennett was stealing a rebuilding team for OKC. People don't care about the Mariners because they don't have an equivalent to a young A-Rod or Ken Griffey Jr. But hey, the Seattle Sounders, love me some MLS soccer!
Now, I get on Facebook, and all I see are college friends who are all of a sudden "diehard" 'Hawks fans. Looking for tickets. Selfies in their #3 and #24 jerseys. Seahawks themed parties. Seahawks tattoos. "Beast Mode" videos. I mean, half these people have never heard the name Matt Hasselback, Shaun Alexander, Lofa Tatupu, or any other decent Seahawks player pre-2011. The 12th Man is an absolute joke. The noise is a product of the stadium design, not some superior fanbase; it's just not a sports city, which is fine. It absolutely drives me nuts to pretend that it's some sort of deeply-rooted culture. That, if for no other reason, had me rooting for GB yesterday. It's too bad that the passionate folks who probably deserve to have a winning team to root for had to watch an absolute choke job from McCarthy and company. He was coaching to not lose; Sleazy Pete was coaching to win, no holds barred.
Man, I hate this Super Bowl matchup.
