OT: OT Thread, Winter Edition(2nd Fall for Georgians)

Yeah, that has been on my mind, but it's also lit a fire under me and reminded me how passionately Canadian I am, and how I'm willing to fight against any threat to our nation's sovereignty.

Lots to think about and consider for sure when making a major life decision such as this.
If you come back bring Ozzy man with you he's hilarious.

I moved back to Canada from the States when I was 30 to raise my family here

No regrets, but I can't see myself spending another 45 winters here either lol

Good luck wherever you end up!

My daughter is in grade 7 and son is in grade 11 and I am beginning to start thinking about the next phase of my life and what that looks like.

priorities I am weighing:

Where will my kids settle as they grow older. If one or both are in Winnipeg I would happily choose this as my home base. If they both move to different cities there is not much keeping me here. I will cross that bridge when I come to it.

I need to manage large blocks of my time getting out of Canadian winters. Being really active and in nice weather will be the top priority. Jan Feb March April need to be warm weather.

We've never done warm getaways because our kids all played hockey... that ate up the time and disposable income

Now that I'm down to one kid playing high school (and she might opt out next year), things are changing

If we could even spend the first two weeks of February somewhere hot and maybe a 5 day ski trip t start of March, I'd be happy. Little trips to break things up and give us something to look forward to

Even this year, I'm heading to BC this weekend for the youngest's soccer then flying to Halifax to visit the older daughter for the rest of the week.... it won't be tropical, but the weather in both places should be at or around zero... that's a win for me lol

We've started looking hard at options. My wife retires in July; I'm about 12 months away. Our daughter is living in Brandon and working full time.

Winters hold limited appeal. I can do some of it but have limited interest in it. I don't mind winter activities but as we age, the risk associated with many winter activities also increases. I imagine in retirement a day like today I'll just wake up, look outside, check the temperature and say 'nope, not today'.

We'd like to be out of the country at least two months of the year, three would be better. Costa Rica and Panama are starting to hold more appeal as Hawaii/U.S. is simply too expensive with the horrible exchange rate. Even without the exchange rate Hawaii has become somewhat obscene. It was always expensive; post-Covid it is much worse.

Planning to leave for Vietnam and Southeast Asia the winter of 26. We want to leave at the beginning of December and come back at the end of April.
The next winter will be spent in South America and possibly part of Central America.

Yea breaks really help.

My mom and dad retired at 60 and took a few years trying out Florida, Hawaii, and Arizona. They eventually landed on Arizona and on a teachers pension they managed to live in Mesa for 6 months every winter. They had lots of Canadian friends in their park and they lived an extremely active life style (golfing, Tennis, happy hours, walking). Dad is 94 now and I think one of the reasons he lived so long was all the activity in the winter.

I think that had a pretty strong impression on me. They loved their winters in Arizona and they were both aligned on that plan. They summered at their cottage until they were about 70 then sold that since Island living is heavy.

I am not sure what my plan will be. I love Hawaii but that would probably be part of a larger plan. Maybe multiple locations at least initially. Mostly I will keep an open mind.

Went to Costa Rica last winter on a vacation and I was blown away by how nice it is. Very hot as well when we were there in January.

So my wife lost her job today, was at her company for 5 years. Loyal, worked hard and even passed over some other job opportunities to stay with them. But tossed aside due to supposed restructructuring and to save money and other lame reasons. And 3 months before we have to renew our mortgage. They offered a fair severance package but I'm just so f***ing mad at them and heartbroken for her. She worked really hard to get to a team lead position with them and was loyal. She's been having coworkers and the people under her messaging her all day, they are shocked and upset.

Dont take anything for granted, especially with lunatics from another country threatening us and trying to disrupt our economy and way of life. And dont apologize for them either. The only ones that pay is the little guy or gal.

That's tough. Hope you all come through it better off in the end.
