A bit older news, as far as news goes (from the Jim Matheson department of breaking news.:D), but "Putin's Chef" Yevgeny Pregozhin met his demise the other day. I think most people knew something like this was coming, including Pregozhin himself. Putin is obviously trying to expand his methods of elimination of individuals who have crossed him or even just disagree with him, and having a nice, tidy "plane crash" is certainly a good way to remove a batch of them, as Pregozhin's 2nd in command and others affiliated with top positions in Wagner went down as well. It's tough to shove 7 people out of a hotel window at once or have multiple salmonella sicknesses gone bad to look much like "accidents", so this is getting creative. The old tried and true KGB method of showing up to someone's place in the middle of the night and then having them 'disappear" was getting stale. Now, to wait and see how much of an influence Pregozhin had over anyone else in the general public. Just another chance for Putin to show that you don't f*** with the big boy in any way, shape or form. As for Pregozhin, no love lost, as he was a slimy, criminal, two faced opportunist, who bent over for Putin like a lap dog to try to move up the ladder. He found out that hanging with other criminals and cutthroats usually means you will meet your end sooner or later. No honour in this group of thieves and scroundrels.

Putin and Russia are straight out no longer hiding that they have a mafia-esque style state funded by oil and gas revenue.

The sooner NATO gets directly involved and ends this mess the sooner Putin and his gang of thieves can get relegated to the dustbin of history.

Where are you headed to in Europe?

Ok now that I’ve had a couple hours more sleep….we fly the direct KLM from Edmonton to Amsterdam and spend a few days there, then off to Florence for a couple of weeks and then up to a small small town in the Piedmont province of Italy between Genova and Turin for a week, and finally to Leuven in Belgium.

The first 2 weeks with great long time friends from high school who now live in Calgary (he hates the Flames as much as I do) and then 2 weeks with our son and his family (our first grandchild!).

Thankfully the heat in Italy is going to settle down just as we arrive. When we return I head to Atlanta for a week and back just in time for the opening game vs Vancouver on Oct 11!

I never said anywhere that details of investigations should be released, I only spoke to photos of arrested and or victims of crime.

But on that point, when a public matter such as the WEM shootings occurs I would argue that periodic updates to the community affected isn’t out of line so that they can learn that progress is being made and their own public safety is safeguarded. I’m a strong supporter of the the blue line but I can’t blindly just accept things because “they say so”. This sorely lacks in most Canadian enforcement efforts - think Nova Scotia shootings, New Brunswick, Saskatchewan James Gordon Band shootings, it’s a pattern of cloaking and non information dissemination that the RCMP typically use (although it isnt unique to that policing organization, Toronto’s police is the same. Bill Blair has continued that approach in his various federal ministerial roles as well). Canadian police and jurisprudence would stand to improve if it increased its communication and thereby, transparency in matters.

I can accept that publishing victims names and photos is contentious and where minors are involved, privacy is paramount. However it speaks to a larger issue of transparency when there isn’t public disclosure in matters of public safety in general terms. This is but one of them.
Who are the victims? Both groups were shooting at each other

Sounds like a fun schedule. Been to Amsterdam twice back in the day, and it's really a very cool city.
We are soon going to be in the mind to start our retirement travel and have already discussed going to certain places either in the fall or spring (April). Not only is it better cost wise (away from peak season), but also less crowds, and with the way the summers seem to be heating up everywhere, we're not too keen on moving around in relentless 40 degree weather, so it seems like your timing is very good.

Three celebrity deaths within a couple days of each other. Bray Wyatt (popular WWE wrestler-just 36) and Terry Funk (old school WWE wrestler) plus Bob Barker today.

Yes you got that right. We have spent every June and September in Europe now for a decade other than the lost Covid years. But now that the Oilers are cup favourites I can’t book June anymore lol.

Our eldest son has been in Belgium now for about 13 years!

Sounds great, especially now with somewhat cooler temperatures. Piedimonte is probably my favorite region, beautiful nature and excellent food and wine. Due to the heat they’ve had to start the vendemia early, so harvest is probably almost done (normally it starts now). There will be loads of good vine and village feasts, enjoy!

We love Italy. Great Food, wine, people, history, art, sights, scenery. It has it all!! Never been to Piedmont yet but we are very excited about it. I am going to drive into Genoa one day to meet a blacksmith I buy regularly from.
