This came across my feed today. Film of Pierre Bertons home an hour north of Toronto. The property was left to the writers guild but apparently horribly mismanaged and the one grand home has been left to rot and vandalism. Despicable its been left to deteriorate like this. The place could be a museum.
I wonder as well what kind of depravity leads people to just wantomly destroy things around them as well. This isn't even the work of squatters who would want to preserve the place. This is the work of destroyers that destroy everything in their path and take pleasure in it. Makes you shake your head what this country is even about. This is the foremost Canadian author in history that immortalized our history. In turn his estatte got this treatment. Such a shame.
The writers guild deny they ever owned it. But I remember when he passed they had a new conference saying what their plans were for it. My guess is, that writers guild could not pay the taxes or did not want to pay the taxes. Doing a very brief google search, it looks like the guild gave it to the government almost right away in lieu of taxes and the government did nothing with it. Burton should have did what Robertson Davies did and leave the house to a university.

I must have watched the wrong games. I'm not spotting many current stars of the game either. I watched Canada and they were inept thoughout. Watched Sweden who were supposed to be 3rd ranked in world and didn't see much. Used to support the womens game until they somehow figured they were on par with men and figured they should be paid as much. I just have a hard time supporting such delusion. The womens world cup has been astoundingly good, like I am shocked at the quality of play. Tons of great goals, impeccable penalty kicks, great pace, lots of drama, goalkeepers who actually have a clue . (Italy scored a ridicuously bad own goal on themsleves but otherwise...)
I'm impressed.
Many years ago when I still lived in Edmonton, I spent a summer working for the forestry in and around Banff and Jasper (about 87/88) We came across 13 log cabins that had been built in the late 40s early 50s. They were solidly built. They were in good shape and could be modernized. On the maps we had, these were not on them and we were slightly confused. One of my buddies who worked the GUV and went to the university of Alberta, dug into the cabins and it took him a couple of weeks to figure out what happened. The cabins were built just after ww2 by the Alberta and Canadian government. At some point in time, all Premiers and the PM were supposed to have meetings there one summer. The Cabins were built but the meetings were moved Quebec or something. For about 10 years, the Alberta government kept the upkept of the cabins, then in 1960 something, someone just decided to remove any information about the cabins from the records and they were forgotten about. You’d think the government would have sold / auctioned it off?
Well they are not at all on par that is for sure. Canada was a gross gross underachiever in this world cup, much like the men. Go to tsn and look at the highlight packages for the games, very well played. The womans game is so vastly better than it was even like a decade ago there is no comparisonI must have watched the wrong games. I'm not spotting many current stars of the game either. Interesting comments. I can agree with you that the game has spread out more with more women in the world perhaps playing and getting such experience and exposure as a world cup. But being a longtime fan what strikes me currently is not seeing any womens great players currently. I could be entirely missing out on who those are. Who in your opinion are the current brightest stars and which teams should I grab a look at. Understanding I hate watching the US womens team under any circumstance.Well they are not at all on par that is for sure. Canada was a gross gross underachiever in this world cup, much like the men. You had what would have been my dream job at that age. Man I LOVED the Forestry Trunk area. I visited several of the Fire lookouts and took a look. At the time you could just pull up and say hi. They were all very nice people usually excited to have any visitor other than a bearMany years ago when I still lived in Edmonton, I spent a summer working for the forestry in and around Banff and Jasper (about 87/88) We came across 13 log cabins that had been built in the late 40s early 50s. It sounds like someone was using the Cabins up till the late 70's for hunting or fishing, The road there had been overgrown and nature and taken back the dirt road. The only reason the road to the cabins were discovered was because a forest fire. Last thing I heard was it was now in private hands and used year round.
In every province and city, you would be shocked with some of the stuff that get forgotten about. BC is notorious for owning houses and hotels they forgot about
The Ghost towns we found were not really ghost towns. We found few places people had been using them for shelter for fishing. You had what would have been my dream job at that age. The other fascinating thing about the area is the ghost towns and several areas where coal towns and such existed and now just remnants and foundations existing. History replete in the area. I loved exploring around and stumbling across former settlements in the area. But one doesn't have to go far to see such things. several examples of this exist just within Edmonton (and more did before subdivisions were built ontop of prior settlements.
heh. I hadn't known I needed to be potential Juvenile offender to be granted such opportunity. Man, concur that would have been a great experience. Its kind of funny that it was granted as some sort of punishment in form of community measures. I would want to have had it and applied, and didn't get it.The Ghost towns we found were not really ghost towns. We found few places people had been using them for shelter for fishing.
As for this dream job--of the two choices I was given. Spending the summer planting tree and exploring area all across Alberta was the better of then spending the summer under lock and key(first time offence did something best described as greasy kid stuff). I did have a blast, all the so called grownups were all outlaws (best was to describe them) and it was one of the best times I had in my life.
Best part of that summer was I spent half the time working and half the time fishing- "need to see if there are fish here" is how one of the outlaw described it.heh. Our Physed teacher/Hunter training teacher took a group of us out to Wilmore Wilderness area north of Hinton. He was a great teacher and instilled my love of the area. Several ghost towns exist in the Forestry Trunk area. Saw several.
I haven't seen a ton of individual brilliance like you'd see from a prime Ronaldo or Messi. That said there are a lot of quality players and a fair bit of parody. I really enjoyed watching Portugal against Vietnam and the US. Lots of flash and individual skill. Some teams rely heavily on their height advantages since the vertical jumps of the players aren't close to what they are in the men's game. Lots of promise as there are a good number of players that are in their teens and early 20's showing that the game will be in good hands going forward. The more soccer that I watch the more that I find myself admiring the South American flair for the game. Brazil is out, not sure if the women have the same flair of guys like Neymar, Ronaldinho, etc. just in smaller doses. Maybe I'll watch a game or two of theirs on demand and see.Interesting comments. Speaking of DnD, Balder's Gate 3 fully releases today.
Might be the first new game I buy in a while. The depth is insane.
Seems like a good game to just chill and play.
No surprise.
Germany, #2, just bowed out not getting a result against #72 team in the world. Germany did not advance to knockout for first time ever. They join Canada and Brazil as topten teams that didn't even advance and all had an easy enough path to advance.I haven't seen a ton of individual brilliance like you'd see from a prime Ronaldo or Messi.
