Watching Waino pitch is just sad now.
17.5 million a year baby. not like signing a 42 yr old pitcher to a minimum base salary with INCENTIVES for performing well would have been the proper way to handle him or anything. i will never doubt bowtie boy again, he knows best.

At this point, get waino to 200 and just stick him in the bullpen or something
just put him in the bullpen now and get him 2 wins that way. he checked out last september anyways and only cares about his paycheck and promoting his music/singing at this point.

At this point Wainwright is our best player, he's carrying us to that top draft slot.

Wainwright should've rode off into the sunset with Albert and Yadi after last year. The whole organization could've turned the page.

honestly, I would rather see a player go one year too many, like waino, than have someone hang it up too early like Barry Sanders
I get what you're saying but his situation is nothing like Sanders'. He's 42. I wish he would have hung it up with Yadi and Pujols and the Cardinals focused on getting some effective pitching in the offseason instead of signing him. One good starter in his place could have changed the dynamic of the team. His retirement party has come at a great cost.

Does a top 5 pick in baseball have the same impact a top 5 in hockey can have?
Not really. The mlb draft is a lot more hit or miss than the NHL draft. If you go back a decade there are a lot more misses than there are hits in the top 5. That being said the better the draft pick the better talent you can pick on paper but it doesn't always end up that way

Aug. 8: OF Tyler O'Neill (left knee tightness) scratched from starting lineup
O’Neill, who has been one of the Cardinals’ hottest hitters since returning from a 2 1/2-month absence with a lower back strain, was scratched from Tuesday’s game against the Rays at Tropicana Field because of tightness in his left knee. O'Neill said he felt the knee tighten up Monday, and it got worse after he ran on the turf before Tuesday's game. He said he expects to be back in the lineup Wednesday.
Since returning on July 20, O’Neill has hit .283 with three home runs and seven RBIs. In 44 games this season, he has hit .248 with five home runs and 13 RBIs.

lmao this dude is made of paper

sigh Some people want to trade Walker already. I think he’ll be able to improve his defense, but holy freaking hell, do I not understand some Cardinals fans. I’ve only blocked one person on Viva El Birdoes, and it was a middle school troll. May have to block more people at this rate, and I rarely block people.

Gorman last year, Walker this year, Winn is the next one up. Cards fans love giving up on young players then crying after they go off after they are traded.

There was an older guy I work with who’s a big fan yesterday going on about how they should trade him. I’m like dude, he’s 21 lmao. For young highly rated hitters in this organization, if they’re not Pujols 2.0 they’re automatically busts.

Also Walker hasn't played the outfield that much in the Minors. He was a 3rd basemen in double AA and only then started to get some playing time in the outfield. Dudes trying to learn how to handle major league pitching as well as learning a whole new position on the fly

I'm too lazy to look up more in-depth data, but one stat I found with a quick search was that ~65% of MLB 1st round picks play a game in the MLB but over 90% of NHL ones do. If you look at the top 5 or 10 players picked, you'll find that even the biggest busts picked in the top 5 like Patrik Stefan or something are at least playing multiple full seasons in the NHL. In MLB, there are lots of top 5 selected players who don't even reach the majors.

And that's ignoring the intricacies of MLB draft slot values. In some ways they may make the numbers better, because you may select worse talent with a high pick to bank slot money to make stronger selections later in the draft. But definitely makes it annoying as a hobbyist fan to really appreciate what those selections mean vs. getting to see Dvorsky in pro camp a year or so after his selection.

It's just silly reading comments labelling Walker a bust and things like that while these guys are excited we chased the upside picking Chase Davis in the draft. Walker is YOUNGER THAN DAVIS OUR 1st ROUND DRAFT PICK this year! But no one is calling Davis a bust because he's in A ball right now. It's still like a 98th percentile outcome for him but Walker still has the Aaron Judge upside based off how hard he hits the ball and he's shown that in the majors, he just needs to adjust that launch angle to get it into the air more. And Judge didn't play in the majors until he was 24.

At 21, both Arenado and Goldy were in the minors. Arenado would debut at 22 and hit .267, while Goldy wouldn't debut til 23 and hit .250 in 47 games. He's already putting up comparable numbers to guys who would turn elite while getting 1-2 less years of seasoning in the minors. Cards fans need to dial it back a lot.
