Seems like the price for Murphy was pretty high. Plus with the Blue Jays waiting to see what Murphy was traded for and the Cardinals didn't want to wait until the last minute. I could see a trade for a Pablo Lopez if they still want to add a starting pitcher and to clear some spot for Walker in the Spring. We have Yepez/Burleson/Nootbaar battling for the last outfield spot right now

Yeah, if we could get Lopez or some sort of similar SP, that would put us on a path to having a really good off-season.

I find it funny that the Padres are offering the most money yet no one wants to go to them right now

It's pretty enjoyable. Makes me feel like there's something wrong somewhere in the organization, people don't want to play in SD, or they look at the lineup and ask "well, where would I play? "

Looking further into Swanson, why are we saying he's not good offensively? He's paced for 25+ HRs, .300+ OBP, and has had a .247 or better batting average each year for the past three years.

Apparently the ask for Murphy was Nootbaar, Donavan, and Graceffo. The ask for Jensen was either Nootbaar or Helsley

I would've been ok with Nootbaar for Jansen, I think those 2 are pretty close to even value. Hard pass on Helsley for him though. The Murphy package is ridiculous. Obviously guys like Donovan and Nootbaar need a bigger track record to have bigger value, but Donovan for Murphy is much closer to equal value than added Noot and Graceffo. I could even argue that Donovan is worth more, he has more control, his positional flexibility is probably as valuable as being a catcher, and he already had a higher WAR season than Murphy.

Based on Goold's article sounds like pitching is the next priority. Hopefully it means a starter for the front of the rotation, but at least they know this was the next priority. The offense is going to need some of the young guys to either find consistency, bounce back, or breakout. Would really be nice if Walker becomes a star this season.

Had the Cardinals traded for a catcher, they would have used some of the payroll space saved to explore signing a shortstop. With Contreras in place, the Cardinals have remaining budget to turn an eye to pitching, continuing talks with several options at swingman or late-inning reliever and becoming more present in the market for starting pitchers.

“We see the same risks all of you do,” Mozeliak said of rotation and the pitchers in it returning from injury.

If all of the SSs are getting 10 years 200mil+ I don't expect the Cards to bite. It's easy for us as fans to spend another person's money for them, but I for damn sure wouldn't want to be paying some of these guys 20+mil a year from ages 35-41. Especially since some of them won't even be able to play mlb starter level during that time.

The only good proven option out there in FA is Rodon. We would have to trade for one, and not many options available there as well. Lopez and Glasnow might be available but both come with big question marks. Lopez had a good 2021 but only threw 100 innings. This last season he threw 180 innings of 3.75 era ball. Glasnow is coming off an injury and has only thrown 94 Innings the last 2 years. The best way to get good pitchers is to develop them because not many good ones make it to Free Agency

I wouldn't mind signing Bassitt, either. He has been a good and sometimes great SP since 2018. Busch is a pitcher friendly park, sinker ball pitcher with a great defense behind him. He's not flashy but definitely lengthens the rotation.

Yep, isn't an ace, but a front of the rotation guy and would give us some security for next and future years since the majority of our starters will be free agents next off-season.

The Athletics sought a return of outfielder Lars Nootbaar, Gold Glove-winner Brendan Donovan, and a power young pitcher like Gordon Graceffo in exchange for Murphy and three years of control, according to a source with knowledge of the talks.

I think it makes last season even more special that this moment and then being the one to take over for Molina were factors in Contreras wanting to be here. Based on those things along, I'd say the guy understands what it means to play here.

An excuse to post 695 again.

Are Donavon and Gorman going to platoon at 2B? Maybe Gorman and Yepez splitting at DH? I can see Contreras at DH too
