all the other teams are hiring up HC's and the Jets as usual are like the ugly girl at the school dance
I don't get the McCarthy hate or dumping on the Jets for pursuing him. I think he's exactly what the Jets need. He's established, he's been a winner, he has coached a young QB who became a huge star, etc. He brings stability to an organization that desperately needs it.
We've done the up-and-coming coach route with Bowles, Ryan, Mangini, and even Edwards, and none of those guys had it. Who are we missing out on? Kingsbury and Gase? Rhule or Bieniemy? Caldwell? Bruce Arians? Those guys are either unknowns or retreads with varying degrees of success themselves. I just don't see how any of them are better fits. Some of them are interesting, sure, but better? Impossible to say.
I think it's great that McCarthy has decided he only wants the Jets job and I don't believe it's because no one else wanted him. He must like the appeal of Darnold, think Maccagnan is at least competent, and that Christopher Johnson is orienting things in the right direction. I mean if no one else was legitimately interested and he wasn't actively interested in the Jets, he could just sit out a year or two and work for ESPN and wait for a "better" opportunity.
I think he'd be a terrific hire and that someone of his caliber is seeking the opening is a great sign. He's an accomplished coach, more so than anyone else out there. He seems unlikely to take a job just to take a job if he thinks it's going to be a bad fit and eventual failure, because then that may be it for him as he'd be approaching 60.
Sign me up for McCarthy. One of the smarter hires the Jets have made in my life, IMO. If it happens.
This is my whole thinking. McCarthy is stable. And he's also a good coach! He has taken over with a young QB before. He knows how to do it. He has an offensive orientation. He's respected. The worst criticism of him is "He maybe could/should have won another Super Bowl!" which would be awesome praise for any other Jets coach. The more time that has gone on, the more I've come around to it.
Mainly because of the stability and professional angle. We can't afford to gamble on a Kingsbury type guy. I know everyone wants the next McVay, but there's a whole lot of flops with hires like that people forget.
This team has been an unorganized mess for years. They need a professional coach who can run a proper NFL org and team.
Darnold needs stability, not a roll of the dice.
I don't know who Benjamin Allbright is, but that sounds ****ing dumb so I assume it's accurate.
I read that the Browns wanted McCarthy but insisted on retaining their OC so McCarthy said no.
That's what I think it will come down to. McCarthy wants more control than the stupid-ass Jets are probably willing to give. So they'll go with some college guy or other inexperienced candidate who won't demand control.
Yes this exactly. Unfortunately Mac was hand-picked by Woody's Old Boys GM Search Committee so he wields more influence than he deserves, even though Chris is now running the show. He shouldn't have a job, and yet here he is, f***ing up the next few years or more. Awesome stuff.I think MacCagnan is probably weary of McCarthy. He knows if this draft isn't nailed, they have an in-house replacement in cutting lose next offseason and just giving McCarthy more control.
I would imagine that's his take. and I imagine he's telling Chris Johnson that too.
