I also think it's a bit unfair to compare to these 2 teams (lightning/avs). They are benefitting or benefitted from having an elite player at ridiculously cheap salary.

Maybe the Devils can be in a similar position in a few years if/when the salary cap goes up with Jack Hughes being on a steal of a contract.
That is being a sharp GM. A GMs job is to get as many good players as he can fit under the cap. Value contracts are a key to building a consistent winner.

Tampa didn't really play its game last night after they tied it up in the 2d period. They stopped being aggressive when they stopped having to catch up. It's not a good idea for them to counterpunch against Colorado and surrender puck possession, they need to continue to be aggressive. Their scheme for third periods against the Rangers in tied games that they won with one quick break at the end isn't going to win them this series. Colorado is too dangerous themselves. They will need to play Colorado more like they played Toronto.

They’ll make the adjustment. It’s what they are good at. Their games 1’s are almost always their worst of the series.

Is this Av’s team that much better than last year’s? I ask because Vegas figured out how to shut them down last year and beat them in five games. If last year’s Vegas team could figure out, why not a Tampa team that is better and more proven than that Vegas team?

Will be fascinating to watch.

They’re definitely better. Byram has been great in the playoffs, Lehkonen was a nice add, Nichushkin is playing at a higher level. Even without Kadri it’s close. With him, it isn’t.

What? No, it's just luck with how everything lined up. Mackinnon signed for 6.3 mil / year which at the time was definitely not a bargain deal by any means for his production when he signed it. Then the cap went up and now it's a steal.

No. That is taking a risk on a player that had not yet broken out. Sakic bet and won his bet big time.

Sure, I wouldn't call that a sharp gm making value contracts though. It wasn't exactly a value contract at the time. It was like you said, a risk.

And we've essentially done the same thing with Hughes. His contract seems to be aging well also.

Yup, which I mentioned also. We might be in position to benefit from an elite player on a very good contract soon as well. Also need the cap to go up a lot too though.

Serious question. What do you think is a better way of weaponizing your cap space? Betting on a young player breaking out is smart GMing IMO. An example of a less effective way of weaponizing your cap space is trading for a 3rd pair declining DMan with a $9 mil cap hit.

I'll maintain that acquisition, although made by and attributed to Shero, was influenced from way above in no small part to put fannies in the seats. There is no way to justify that kind of money, cap space issue or not, on a DMan in decline with known back problems. I don't care how bad the Devils D was, the Subban deal was a waste.

The fact that a Subban deal literally had zero impact on the Devils capwise in three years just tells you how freaking hyper conservative they’ve been otherwise.

I think it was done to appease Hall. That and getting Gusev were to try to make some short term improvement in the team while Hall was pondering his contract. In retrospect obviously pointless.

Especially since they apparently weren't looking to give Hall any more than five years and he wanted a longer-term deal. Obviously management proved correct on that, but still you can't figure the guy's gonna sign a five-year deal a year after a Hart Trophy if that's your line in the sand.

That whole ordeal was poorly handled. I think The lesson is to respect your best players but don’t let them run the team NBA style.

Theres honestly so many good "second tier" players in these teams (what a surprise its the final) I would kill to be on Devils. Paul, Nichuskin, Lehkonen, Colton.. Hagel hasnt been too great but he seems to be hurt. Or more hurt than others.

:eek3:
