But that’s not enough. You also need to be willing to cheap shot people with the goal of injuring them too. Size and physical play isn’t enough. Manson’s hits were fine but he follows through with a stick to Hedman’s face. Perry and Maroon unnecessarily and subtly cheap shot Kuemper when he’s bent around the post. NJ needs to start putting metal blades on the ends of their sticks and shivving guys in the back like it’s rec time in the yard.
Kucherov could be even better if he didn't check out some games. That combination when they're both on is scary.

Its just that the big size guys don't rely on skills that get neutered from the nonsense that happens in the playoffs.
You want guys that slash people's shins every time they skate past you and guys that crosscheck people every time they skate into the offensive zone but you also want guys that can shrug off those cross checks and guys who can avoid those slashes because their game doesn't revolve around skating the puck into the offensive zone.
Plenty of guys toe the line but the Devils desperately need to get some guys who can throw weight around or get in a goalies face. I’ve said it for years were by far the easiest and softest team to play against.

This is very well put. You can argue we need to get bigger, stronger or more gritty to make the playoffs. But to win once you get there, you need certain type of nastyness. You need some pests who can also play. I dont ever want NJ players to take kucherov like cheapshots, thats not what I mean. But you need to hurt your opponent in the playoffs and make them feel uneasy. Not injure anyone, but hurt. Prime Mercer definitely has some potential to grow into a player like that.
That’s not enough. No cheap shots no winning in the playoffs. Sticks in the back and the nuts. Hit after the whistle hit the goalie when he’s vulnerable etc. head shots too
Do you think these guys are not trying to hurt each other? Looks that way to me as a totally neutral observer.
Like I said originally it’s depressing to me. I want to see the best players in the world skate and display their skills. Checking and some genuine fights are fine and expected. I would just love if they actually took the cheap shots out of the game once and for all but watching this game both teams are using them in the ordinary course of play.
