This is a little bit of a sidetrack, but back in the 90s I felt the same exact way about Bill Ranford. His entire reputation was based around his Conn Smythe playoffs in 1990, and he did jack shit after that. Every year I had to read hockey publications saying how he was one of the top 3 goalies in the NHL, yet at his best he looked average to me. Hardly elite material.
See, this is EXACTLY what I'm talking about!

Funny enough, just yesterday I brought up Ranford, along with Cam Ward, Matt Murray and Antti Niemi when talking about Jordan Binnington and how he shouldn't even be an option to bring to the Devils, due to both his long and big money cap hit contract, on top of the fact that he's not been a particularly good goalie in the NHL, but merely an average to just above average one. And the only thing that's given him an above average career in the NHL so far is the 2019 rookie year/playoffs/cup win. And I cited those names as guys that will go down as JAG's, but all of them were starting goalies on cup teams within the last 5-32 years.

Ranford had a couple good years early in his career, but he's to the 80's/90's what Cam Ward was to the 00's/10's.

I remember exactly what you're talking about too and it took quite a while for Ranford's reputation to really pop. It started to a little bit right around the time Edmonton had traded him, but he was already on his fourth below average to poor year in his last five seasons by then.

I didn't say anything about that but they without a doubt got better at the deadline.
I know . I wasn’t crapping on you for saying anything. Just that Tahs fans already are talking Copp up like he is Crosby and with every point Copp gets , there will be tons of posts made about it

Which one? The first three were all poor goals on him, but the first two were both softy of the night caliber, maybe even softy or the week/month caliber. That Rasmussen goal was definitely a softy of the month type of goal.

And it’s beyond insulting that Keith Jones commentary on that Rasmussen goal refers to Georgiev as an “Outstanding netminder”.

I mean f***in seriously? Yeah, he’s an outstanding netminder when you compare him to the MILLIONS of people at every single level and expertise of goaltending across the entire world. When it comes to NHL goaltending he’s about as mediocre as it gets.

This is why I’ve developed this reputation for hating goalies around the league. Because I’m not a f***ing puppet that’s gonna get on TV or on my YouTube channel/blog/whatever and needlessly (and falsely) point out that Georgiev is an outstanding netminder.

It’s not just him though. One particularly horrible example of this was when Kevin Weekes was hyping how good Mike f***in Condon (he was the answer to the trivia in the last game we had the other night) was. Yeah, a guy that had one dead average season in between a couple of really terrible ones. I don’t even think he played one single pro game at any level after his 30th birthday.

This is why I get so defensive whenever somebody hypes up some mediocre goalie like Vejmelka and Georgiev himself. Or having to be told for a few years by the media that Martin Jones is an elite goalie.

All I keep thinking about is some kid that’s new to hockey watching tonight’s game and telling other kids at school who are not new to hockey that he heard Georgiev is an “outstanding netminder”.

Watching the Isles Rangers and really I can’t see the Rags going anywhere in the playoffs. They are just too loose defensively, Shesterkin or no Shesterkin.

Any team that plays them is going to to get more than its share of chances. Terrible transition D. Lots of blown coverages. Heck that’s how we scored 7 times on them. They are not built for playoff hockey.

We still could finish dead last . Depends on when Hammond plays and if he is healthy. I can see us use him exclusively here on out . If we rode Gilles the rest of the way , there is a legitimate chance we finish dead last. I can see Allen winning some games for the Habs , hopefully Hart gets “hot” or plays as good as he can (just for the end of this season ).
Our biggest enemies are the Kraken and the Yotes. I can’t see them suddenly turn it on and start playing well. Sabres are on fire so that’s good.
Sens won tonight so that’s good as well.
Just hope Hammond makes us respectable amd Hughes Bratt Nico Mercer continue to light it up and Wood‘s hip looks like it’s as good as he was before.

One failed skill move and moved right into a second.

Yeah, great and all but Vejmelka still sucks so much ass.

That’s two wraparound goals tonight (Smith with the other, big f***in surprise that is), but I will say that was the least weakest of the three goals f***in shit ass Vejmelka has allowed tonight.

So what started out as what looked like it was gonna be yet another relatively quiet and low stoppable goal percentage night….

Then Smith, Grubauer and Vejmelka’s games all came on and well things got out of control fast.

Watching Oilers / Kings . I still hate Quick. He is an arrogant bugger. That and I hate his style of goaltending.
I remember him being interviewed and he was asked about his good mobility and how it’s is a little unorthodox / unique. Reporter asked how he(Quick) would tell or teach kids how to play goal like he does. Quick said “ I would tell them to try something else because what I do is very hard and not many people can move like me”.
Dick.

style wise only.....not my f***ing deal at all

Yep. We romped all over them because their transition defensive is not so good.

They have elite talent that score, Zib in particular feasted on our mistakes 5v5 and PP is lethal, but they’ll need Shesterkin in god mode to advance the playoffs.

Fox is producing offensively but has been kind of shaky defensively for a while, he might be nursing an injury, and that won’t help if it continues.

It's a very small sample (6 games) but they've been elite at 5v5 since the TDL. 3rd best CF%, 3rd best xGF%, 5th best SCF%, 3rd best HDCF%. I don't expect that level of play to hold up but I've said before I think they could at least tread water due to their additions and looking at what they've done I wouldn't be surprised if they can be a legitimately good 5v5 team now.

Nice, I just turned on that gaem as well. 3-1 with 12 minutes to go . COme on Philly !
If Hughes is hurt and out for the season we have a very good chance of finishing dead last or bottom 3.
Montreal is playing decent under MSL and Allen in net.
Hard part will be having the Coyotes and Kraken step over our dead corpse of a team.

Philly is getting hemmed in but they are at least not panicking . Just keeping the Rangers to the outside and not over chasing the puck around and losing thier assignments. However , they also have a goalie that can make a save from the perimeter unlike our goalies. Pllus they probably dont have good reason to think that every shot on net is going to be a goal.

Shit... as i type this the Rangers get a lucky bounce and its 3-2 and... its 3-3 .... holy shit this is a joke
And its Copp who scored. Perfect , now Rags fans will be saying Copp was the best trade deadline pickup in the history of the game of hockey
