Keep in mind the YOUNGEST players in Bakersfield were born in 1999 (except for their backup goalie).

5 skaters on the Reign were born in 2000 or later.

They are a team of rookies against a team of AHL journeymen and vets.

I don't think the AHL is a good place for U-20 players to be honest, except in situations where it's European players who are going to struggle to see ice-time overseas and have their development stagnated because of it (Voynov, Kupari). If the Kings draft a college player this year in the 1st round I'm hopeful that the AHL is not under consideration for 21-22 season.

Byfield, Kaliyev and Turcotte are the Kings 3 best prospects in the organization (I've graduated Bjornfot), they project as half of the Kings future top 6, they have played a combined 32 games and have 2 goals and combine as a -22. That is disgusting and it's giving them a pass by blaming anyone but them.

So 3 U-2o, non-European players playing in a league that isn't "a good place" for them to play have stat lines that are "disgusting" and they should be blamed for lack of production? I mean, seriously....

Oh wait, Turcotte just turned 20 like 2 weeks ago. My bad.

Yes, 2 goals in 32 games is disgusting. They should be doing better, it doesn't mean they are busts but it also doesn't mean they are immune from criticism, these are players the Kings are counting on to be important parts of the NHL team, sooner rather than later and it does show some alarm that they are struggling so much top produce in the AHL.

Btw, the OHL is not available so where else are the Kings supposed to send Byfield and Kaliyev? Under normal circumstances they would be in juniors. I'm not criticizing either one being there as the Kings have nowhere else to send them as neither is NHL ready. Turcotte should be elsewhere and not part of this disaster but that is water under the bridge and can't be fixed now.

I think our Euro's would have been better served playing a tonne over there rather than against our other prospects

If the AHL is such a difficult league why have other high end players been able to do so well in it. Is there any point that you blame the players themselves?

I agree to an extent. Certainly stat watching can be ridiculed, but of course it's a very tangible way to gauge performance. This is just my opinion of course, by yes there are young players who have just dominated the AHL. But what circumstances did they come in under? Where those solid teams to begin with? ONT right now looks like a mess. Their goaltending is so bad. All 3 goalies have sub .900 SV% and rank pretty much dead last collectively if I had to guess.

ONT defense has been a complete mess. I mean, they suck. Whether it's players or the system, they are so bad. If I were an opposing forward, I'd salivate for these ONT games.

Back to the 3 forwards. I know their stats aren't anything to write home about, but watching them play, I like that they at least generate and don't look out of place. Turcotte and Byfield specifically do a lot of good things in the offensive zone and while this can be a cop-out, I do think they should've had more points based on the chances they've generated.

May have gone over the line on its own, but given only the one camera angle its Imama's goal. Nice to get Turcotte on the score sheet regardless.

Note that Imama tells Turk to lead the handshake line, but that could just be Boko recognizing Turk's first point.

Byfield how the hell did you not burry that. Then Clague with a brutal turnover. What the F*** were you thinking. Sheesh.

Good example why +/- can be deceiving. Horrendous turnover by an individual player and all 5 get the neg.

Benson-Marody-McCleod have all 9 goals in these 2 games for Bakersfield. Its one line the Reign can't stop.

Per Lisa Dillman: Update from earlier this morning. Madden will be evaluated by doctors early in the week, per text from hockey ops.

He has a lot of physical tools and God given, but I think the concerns about hockey IQ are valid. That has been his biggest weakness from watching him play since the draft.

Kind of get the Jack Johnson vibe in that regard. Jack had million dollar tools and no tool box.

I agree with that. I'm certainly no scout, but I see instances of that as well and I'm pretty sure that was one of my criticisms of him during the WJCs. For me at least, I see better decisions in the AHL overall though, but more so related to decisions in the offensive zone. Honestly I don't pay much attention to his play in the d-zone since he's young, but he's certainly had his share of questionable decisions... especially today.
